I left the same message on the MF/MH site

I just inherited a MF 35 from my wife"s uncle. I want to restore this tractor. It was built in 1956 according to the serial number (psgm 171278) The hood is painted red and flaking. Looks like a white color is under the red in several places. Every MF 35 I have ever seen is painted red a grey. Also the hood emblem says Ferguson. Where can I find out what color this tractor is suppose to be? How can you read the serial number to find out what day and month in 1956 the tractor was built?
Thanks in advance for any help

CJ

In 1956 the Ferguson TO-35 had three different color configurations. The early ones were gray/green. In the late spring (when the F-40 was being introduced) they changed the sheet metal to beige. A few of the beige 1956s had green bellies. Most of them had flint metallic gray bellies. They remained beige/flint metallic gray until late 1957 when the colors were changed to red/flint metallic gray. They didn't become MF 35s until 1960.

Does your tractor SN really have a "P" before the "SGM?" Please clarify that point. The correct web site address for Ferguson Enthusiasts of North America (where you can find the correct color configurations) is shown below.

If you will post your Continental engine SN, I can get the informtion that will tell you the exact date the engine was built and shipped to the factory. You cannot tell from any SN exactly which date the tractor was built.

Please check your castings to see if you can find some green paint underneath whatever is now there. If the tractor was originally beige/green is is very, very rare and I would like to hear from you again as I am doing a research project on this. So far, I have come across only three of them that can be authenticated. There were only 4,584 1956 TO-35s built.

Paul, you and I corresponded on several occassions regarding fergies...if you recall, I also asked you some questions regarding my beige and grey 35. I, also, have a lower case "p" at the beginning of my ser. #. Mine has powersteering, maybe you could ask the other fella if his has power steering-it might be a stretch, but could the "p" signify powersteering.
I do not know how to post pics on this site, but I'd be glad to send some pics on my ser.#.
Many thanks, Mark.
I know this has been asked a billion time, but has it ever been discovered the ser. # range that was beige and GREEN?
God bless, Mark

Hi Mark,
My tractor has power steering. I was thinking the same thing that maybe the p was for power steering. I finally got the correct serial number off of my motor. The motor was built on November 8, 1956 and was shipped on November 12 1956. I guess my tractor was built in November or December of 1956. It is definitely beige sheet metal. I have green on the belly but there is more grey than green. Not sure if it is a green belly or not.

Have a great day!

Hi Paul,
Yes there is a P in front of the SGM...It lines up alil lower than the rest of the number.I tried to take a pic of it but my camera wont pick up the number. But it is definatly on the serial number tag along with all the patent numbers. I am sure it was beige originally. Hard to tell if the belly was green. I have scraped of paint all over it and I see red under the seat and grey every where else. There is a green color on several areas around the motor and rear axle. This tractor has been sitting outside in the elements for at least 15 years. I found the name tag on the left side of the motor. The only numbers I could read on it are....647858.....and that number is located on the bottom of the tag, about center. Everything else on that tag has faded out. I down loaded your membership form for FENA. I will fill it out and send it off with a postal money order later this week. Looks like a great site to find out info on the old Fergys.

Thanks

CJ

CJ,

Your engine was built on January 8, 1957 and shipped to the M-H-F factory on Januyary 9, 1957. This is interesting because your tractor is listed in the SN lists as being built in 1956, yet the engine was built in 1957. It is possible that the engine in your tractor is not the original. Another possibility is that the hood, including the cowl with the SN plate is not the original. A third possibility is that if your tractor was a prototype ("P" in front of SN), the factory may have changed the engine before the tractor ever left the factor since it was most likely built in late 1956. if you will will e-mail me at pnelson239 {at} earthlink (dot) com I will e-mail you the survey I am using for my research and hopefully you would be willing to complete it and return it to me.

Thanks.

Paul I sent you a email to the address you left earlier. I had trouble getting through. Let me know if you got it or not. I looked at the engine tag again. That number may be 647358 instead of 647858. I think the 3 is a 8 not sure. Alot of glare on the old tag....very hard to read. There is another number stamped on the motor behind the steering arm on left side it reads 6.17.6 On left side of rear axle the number reads 161 406 M1.

Thanks

CJ

The casting numbers you refer to most likely begin with "G" not "6." That means your tranny case was cast on July 17, 1956. The other is the part number. I have an e-mail blocker on so you may have to jump through some hoops. Please try one more time. Thanks.

Paul

Dave, if you will check my latest response to CJ, I would appreciate if you would also e-mail me so I can send you the survey form also. I am very anxious to document more 1956 TO-35s, particularly those that might possibly be beige/green in color. Thanks!
