Brake Pedal?

I have a '54 To30. The brakes didn't work very well so I have disassembled the brakes and rods that actuate the shoes. I have found the rods froze up on a couple other Fergies, and once cleaned up work much better. The shoes and drums are in good shape. Took me a week to get the ?#*@ screws out of the drums.
It turns out the main brake pedal is very stiff to move up and down. I imagine its gummed up with western Kansas dirt after 50+ years like the rear linkage was. My question - can the shaft that goes through the bell housing be removed w/out splitting? Haven't removed the brake pedal and collar yet to see if I can free it up some. Thank for any help.

I was thinking a bit more about your question while I was doing the other emails and I am thinking that you could possibly have problems getting the shaft to come out easy because the shaft inside will be covered in grit and grease and clutch lining, so it may not slide out as easy as all that and it could end up with you having to take the engine out after all.

Yes it should pull straight through. To test these brakes for being seized-up on that inboard joint on the Independent brakes, just lift each brake pedal one at a time and if the brake rod alongside the transmission bends then the joint is seized. Don't use grease on the ones without the zerk fitting as they have special non-lube bushes which will swell if you use grease.

Thanks John,
You're probably right. I believe I will see if I can ease it back and forth some to try and free it up. Its very stiff so anything will be better than what it is now - hopefully. Maybe use some carb or brake cleaner that dries quickly to help clean it up. Its just another adventure!
Thanks again.
