I think I have read in this forum that the best gear to use when discing and plowing is second gear. This being true do you run the throttle wide open or not? Also what about gear and throttle when bush hogging. Thanks yall

I installed a tach on my TO-20 a few years back and realized it was only revving-up to ~1800 rpm. I adjusted the linkages to get full speed, which is suppose to be 2200 rpm with no load. Sounded like the engine was going to fly apart, didn't like it. I actually re-adjusted my carb. linkage so 1900 RPM is as fast as I can rev it up, I rarely take it to that speed. My "comfort" speed seems to be ~1500 RPM, which is the "working speed" that I like to bush hog, plow, etc. I like the sound and feel of the engine, and the ground speed, at that RPM. I usually B.hog in 1st gear, I'm driving through wooded paths, making sharp turns, watching out for stumps, etc. 1st gear is all the faster I want to go. Even in open fields, I usually go 1st gear to get a better cut. I plow, pull a subsoiler, all in 1st gear ~1500 RPM, 2nd gear seems to fast for me. I do disc in 2nd gear

Always plough in 1st gear, alot less strain on your clutch.I have a TO20 with double bottom that i use and it's all the tractor wants in 1st.Can't imagine ploughing in 2nd.Not a whole lot of difference in the strain on the tractor when using a single or double plough. But of course i am ploughing soil with red clay mixture.

2/3 to 3/4. I seldom run my tractors wide open. Just one of my N's when the big finish mower is behind it and I'm coming up a cetain hill and I have to compensate for the load/hill.

Hi Robert

We use tractors for near 50 years now
We might be lucky but never had engine break down
had just normal engine wear. Regular maintenance and care gives years and years of good service from old irons.

I always operated engines at PTO 540 RPM depending of the tractor means aprox engine RPM 1850~1900. If there is no tach on the tractor it represents aprox 3/4 throttle.

The manufacturers had in mind that at 540 PTO RPM
(1850~1900 engine RPM) the tractor may work day long without damage.

It is "my" perspective others may differ.....

Joe on the TO and TE tractors 3/4 throttle is correct for PTO speed but the engine revs are 1500rpm, just thought you may like to know.

Hi John

You are right...this is Ferguson board
I mentionned that the 540 vs RPM were aprox and
depends of the tractor. I shd hd been more precise regarding TE and TO tractors which are 1500/540. Our MF-135 and MF-50 are 1700/540. Our crawler is 1900/540.

Apologies to all for my imprecision.

joe....i agree. 3/4 throttle is about where i run my tractors. not too slow, not too fast. and good maintenance is crucial. i'm an oil and grease fanatic! clean radiator at least after every use, and rinse or blow my machines off regualarly.

good advice, -mike

Yep

Centrifugal force is at square the engine
RPM. A 50 year old engine has loose components
due to the wear..age and operating conditions over all sorts of climate. The possible result for a old engine at full throttle is a connecting rod break and big hole in the engine block. When the connecting rod insert bearing develop a little loose it woobles and hit up and down on the crankshaft at each revolution. At high revolution it hit harder and harder develop a yoyo effect by centrifugal force and finish by destroying the insert bearing.

Old engine life may be extended:
a) Use good viscosity oil at warm climate
b) Do not run engine at full throttle
c) Do not let the engine reach hi rev when downhill
d) Do not run the engine at + 1500 RPM with no load for long period.

It is my perspective others may vary

robert...some may argue this, but personally i never run wide open throttle. it's just a quirk of mine maybe, but i don't feel it's good for the engine. tractors are geared for power and i use the gears according to the job i'm doing. if i can run the tractor comfortably in second when plowing or discing i will, but if it seems to be logging down, instead of throttling up i change to a lower gear. discing i may run in a lower gear when starting out but after things break up i'll go over it again and jump up a gear if i can. bush-hogging you do have to keep the RPM's up, but again, i never run "full" throttle, if i get into something heavy i gear down. mostly i can just listen to my tractor and know by the sound of it what gear i need to run in. after you use yours for a while you'll get an "ear" for it also, and it will tell you what it wants.

1500 engine rpm will give you 545 pto rpm.

We never run our Fords and Fergies at full throttle. 2nd gear was used for tillage work. On tractors with a 5 spd. we used 3rd. 850 Ford and SM Farmall. We would run the SM at full throttle but that engine at high idle run at 1495 rpm.
