Eating TO-35 starters

Does anyone know why my 1956 or 1957 TO-35 keeps going through starters?

I completely rebuilt a junkyard tractor and converted it to 12 volts.(pictures at this site)

#1: I had the starter rebuilt. When I bolted it in and started it the starter self-destructed in a very spectacular display.

#2: The same shop rebuilt it and it worked for a few months and then I killed it by hitting the starter switch while it was still spinning (OK, my fault).

#3: They rebuilt it again and it has worked for a year without any problems. Yesterday I go out and I hear it quietly spinning but the engine doesn't turn.

Help!

It sounds like the bendix drive is worn out this time. Was it rebuilt with all new replacement parts? Or did they just fix the immediate problem?
Check the model number of the starter in your owners manual. It's most likely a Delco. then check the model number on your starter and make sure it's the same. A quality rebuilt starter with the correct model number for your machine should not be having these problems. If your model number is correct, find another rebuilder.

Thanks Jerry,

I agree. This time I"m getting a new/rebuilt one from Davis Tractor. It"s the same price.
