Pull the right side access cover and with the engine running, move the lifdt control lever to the lift position and look up toward the lift cylinder. If you see more than a few drops of oil coming down, you have leaking hyraulic piston rings or a cracked lift cylinder. If that looks OK look in the front right hand corner of th pump chamber and see if the gasket on the piston supply tube is leaking oil. Check to make sure that the wishbone on the control valve is connected. Finally, make sure the control valve is not stuck open.

look upwar

I have done a couple of replies on this subject already, it isn't 90W gear oil you need it is GL1 90W which is thinner and totally different oil, you can also use 15W/30 Multi-grade oil if you are in a cold climate it will not go as thick when cold. If the oil is thicker than you would use in a truck/car engine it needs to be changed, if it is just as thin then it could be the Control Valve sticking maybe not travelling the full movement due to wear or just sticking. If you need help with this I have service Information for this, just email me at:- fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk
if you need it, just tell me again what the problem is and I can be sure to send you the right Info and pictures.....John

jim...your trouble could be due to many different possibilities. start with the easy ones...is your gear box oil level full? do you have the correct gear oil? is your gear oil old and dirty? how cold is it where you are, did you allow it to warm up for a while if it's real cold out?

i would check these things first and if these are all ok then you might have other problems. let us know what you find.

1st thing is to replace your hyd. oil with 80/90EP oil, available from tsc stores. w/o the correct oil, ferguson hydraulics suck! next, check there's enough oil in it. it holds 7.0 gallons. next, make sure the check valve is ok.

80/90 EP oil is wrong it should be GL1 80 or 90 w il which is like the oil you would use in a car engine...EP oil is not suitable for the Hydraulics as it is too thick and contains certain sulfurous additives that will eat away the Yellow metals in the Pump and Diff and G/box. The mistake is often made over this oil due to the rating they use, at first glance it appears to be the EP variety but it is incorrect.

It isn't gear oil it is GL1 90W which is not the same as 90W EP gear oil. you can use 15W/30 Multi-grade as well, this will remain thinner than the GL1 type if you are in a cold climate and will help the oil to flow in the Pump.

john...i just refer to it as gear oil to differentiate it from cankcase oil. i get mine right from my AGCO-MF dealer. i ask for the straight mineral oil, M1103-SAE-90. is this the same as the GL1 you referred too?

and...how much DOES the TO-30 take. my TO-20 takes 6 (US) gals. isn't the 30 the same capacity?

The M1103 oil is correct, it causes quite a lot of confusion when they say 90W, (lots of people think that it is the gear oil because it is in the gearbox and the Axle they seem to forget it is in the hydraulics too) and we get this a lot on here, I was just making sure that you did have the correct oil. To confuse matters even more, the oil we used over here in the UK when the tractors were still in production was the same as we used in the engine which was SAE30/40 and it was approved by the factory for use. The oil capacity is 6 US gallons same as the TO20 and the TE20's....John
