Well I finally completed reworking front end parts and installed my hood. My parts were pretty mangled and I was able to locate a couple of real nice lower hood panels from a friend in CA.

The lower grill panel for a TO 35 is nearly impossible to locate so when I did find one it was pretty bad. I cut out the entire lower part of it out and welded in new steel. The only difference is that it has no bondo in it which I would have used if it were to look pretty. My grill was caved in and stretched bad so when I straitened it out I had to take a little out of the back and weld back together so it would straighten back out.

The center part of the hood would not latch or lay down in the front so after some heavy thought I took a little out of the hood, welded the broke crossmembers and changed the cross piece for the front latch support and its working much better now

I know its not real pretty but if you look all the sheet metal is pretty decent now and its runny pretty nice. Just need to get the correct left fender on it next. If I paint it later at least we have all good parts now. Like everything else the parts I worked on were painted since they were welded on and sand blasted.

On my hood hinges ( the early 2 button access) I used 3 1/2 cotter pins and went to the hardware store and found a length of 1/4 inch "hard" rubber tubing--I cut a piece to fit on each cotter pin when installed. Worked perfect as there is a need to draw the hinge side down a little when panel is shut. You can also adjust the "spring tension" of the hood by shifting OR rmoving the arc shaped pieces of metal that bolt to the cross memeber of opening. Hope this is helpful. Nice job on the grill. thanks mark! i'm gonna check that out first thing tomorrow about the spring tension. i've always wondered if there should be some kind of "roller" or something on the hinge pins that pulls the hinge side down when it's closed. your hard rubber tubing sounds like what i was thinking about...gonna try that too. what year 35 do you have...gotta be an early one?? can you post a pic or two?

that's some fine looking rubber & rims, & chains your got there! I know you have a few $$$ wrapped-up in that. Your investing the hard $$$ & effort in the right places. A good tractor-guy knows to look past a few dollars in paint and worry about the tires/rims & mechanicals. You got a good looking tractor there!

Wow, when I first saw this I thought "industrial paint from the factory". But when I saw the emblems overpainted and the green showing through I realized my mistake.

You got a nice looking tractor here.

I especially like your "chain adjustment and tightening system" on the rears! Good idea.

Here it is shortly after driving it home. I had tochange out 1 rear wheel as the rim was rusted through and would not hold air.

Hey John!! THERE'S the rest of your tractor!! what do you mean it's not pretty...it's looking great!! i had a feelin' you were workin' on her last night. i've been sitting here with my morning coffee for about 20 minutes just studying everything you did. lotta nice work there. by the way...i've seen tractors that had bondo in the "bibs"...i think there's too much flex in the hood parts cuz every one i've seen that was bondo-ed was all cracked and falling out. i'd leave it just like it is if i was you, it looks fine. i can't believe your tractor has the original side emblems still there. yours is the first one i've seen with them still in place. if you ever decide to clean them and your badge up, you might find the original green background paint underneath. my badge had it, but i didn't realize it until i had cleaned right thru some of it...i wish i had, might been able to save it.
my hood doesn't lay right either. i've messed with it and studied on it and still can't figure out how to get it to lay flat. i kinda think maybe the hood gets "humped up" or something over time and abuse and it's just the way it is.
i have a measurement i need to send you on that control valve bracket i made. as soon as i get it i'll send you a post. it's great to see your tractor in one piece, great job john!

PS...i meant to say i've never been able to get my hood's "sevice door" to lay flat when it's latched. one theory i have is that my hinge pins have been replaced with screws, and i'm wondering if there was some kind of "roller" or something that pulled the hinged side of the door down flat as you latch it....????

I'll try to take a couple of pix of the hood service panel hinges and latches and show you what I did to get mine to lay down. The biggest problem on mine was the service door was longer than the opening (1/16") which I don't understand unless its been replaced. I also had to modify the front cross piece that the tach sets on. If you look at the before pix you can see it does not close in the front

my biggest problem with the fit of the service door is that the door itself is pretty much straight/flat, where the hood seems "arched" or curved from front to back. the hood has been welded in a couple places around the service door opening which has probably either distorted the hood or it wasn't lined up right when it was welded. i CAN close the sevice door and it latches, but it isn't fitting right...and it can get the most annmoying "squeak" you ever heard going when i'm out working. it about drives me nuts (short drive) so i just reach up and unlatch the front latch and it goes away.

I greased under the cross pieces where the hinges pins run and mine quited down and works much easier now
