Do a search and it seems that almost all of the time, tractors are referred to as "girls", e.g. "that old girl". etc...

Anyone venture why?

What about languages that have fem. and masc. (Spanish, Italian, German,...) What is a tractor? der? die? or das?.. Is that where it comes from?

:-) Jim

Shoot I call my tractor all kinds of names when it doesn't want to start on a cold winter morning. Gender does not matter at that point.

In French it's called "Un tracteur". "Un" is masculine. I've tried calling mine a guy's name and for some reason it doesn't fit. "Fergie" seems to work better which is fine cause' chances are that this is the closest I will ever get to riding Fergie Hard! (you know, Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas...) Ohhh yeah!

Take a look at her:

Just as every thing is going along smooth and nice, through no fault of your own, somthing blows up and you do not know why.

You spend hours and hours, caressing and coxing, gently prodding only to find it was some small thing that put a hault to the relationship. And somewhere in the back of your mind you wonder if you make one wrong turn if that will be the end.

Fellows, I hate to swim upstream but two of my three Fergusons have male names. My wife named my TO-30 "Harry." She named my former TO-35 "Fergie." I named my F-40 "Mac." Go figure . . ..

I don't really know the answer. But I'll tell ya how MY tractor got it's feminine name.

I had searched for a specific tractor for many years - I told my Wife I wanted one just like the one I grew up driving. Every time I saw a similar tractor I'd stop and look it over. But they weren't quite what I was looking for - I told her it just wasn't "MY" tractor.

After 10 years of looking I finally found it at an auction and was able to buy it. I drive her home and put her in the geerage. I was out there with some rags wiping it down when my Wife comes home.

She got out of the car, looked over the tractor and said:

"Is your baby gonna sleep in the garage tonight, or am I ???"

The name stuck, and she's been named "Baby" ever since.

Well here is my opinion on why we call or tractors she.Maybe it is because they are so purty and we do spend a lot of time with them and do enjoy going for a ride on them wether it be for work or pleasure. My wife doesnt read this so i guess im safe.

Here in Montana I never heard anyone refer to their tractor as a "she", but I've heard tell about some guys in Eastern Montana that had girls name for their favorite sheep.

i was re-reading you post and was still kinda confused about the language part...but i think i got 'er figgered out. it doesn't have anything to do with masc./fem. it's about singular or plural right? trac-der= one tractor, trac-die and trac-das= are both correct for more than one tractor????? 80)----mike

Hi Mike, actually in some languages, items do have masculine and feminine gender. I don't know much about languages, aber Ich kann ein bisschen Deutsches verstehen. Tractor is masculine (I think) in German (Plurals in German always use the feminine article.) So it doesn't make any sense why Americans make it feminine.....

the tractor = der Traktor
the tractors = die Trackoren

jim...i'd venture a guess about it, but i'm afraid if my wife ever decided to look thru this forum to see what i find so darn interestin', i'd be making yet another trip out to the "doghouse". so just in case she does ever look in here i'll say...maybe it has something to do with reliabilty, loyalty, and how much work they do for us? (how's that honey?)

Well, I'm not married, so I have little to worry about. Fortunately someone already has answered this question. "They always say she's a beauty and not he's a beauty, and I found out why. How many times on a cold morning, when you really need it, she won't turn over?" (Rodney Dangerfield, monologue, 1980)
