I ran across this circuit just poking around on the internet today:

I have read on some forums that some folks have issues with newer battery chargers not working well for electrolysis or even for battery charging and I am wondering if this one will work when those don't.

I also post it here in case someone has some free time and wants to just play around a little.

If anyone builds this thing please post a followup so we know if it works for you.

I use a newer charger that only puts out 6 AMPS. I use my garden tractor battery in series with the charger.

It seems to help.

I built a similar charger some years back and was happy with the results. I used a 317K for the series regulator and used an SCR rather than the op amp to shut it off at the desired voltage. The difference with mine is that when it shuts off it goes into the float mode as indicated by a green led. I wired in one of those cheap LCD readouts that gives me current out to 3 decimal points. I probably would not bother building one of these today since there are now many good ones available off the shelf. Without checking, I believe that battery tender makes a good one, but I know there are many others.
