F-40 ...it appears to have been the coil.

I'm the one who's tractor would die a slow death in about an hour's running...

After doing everything except change the air in all four tires. With your guidance, I went to PepBoys and got a new coil. I gather in 1957 this F-40 came with a 6v system but sometime it was switched out to 12v. Without looking at the coil on the tractor, I bought an internal resistor coil...when, of course, I needed an external resistor coil. ...back to town.

I changed the coil and BINGO: it runs great. It seemed (wishful thinking?) to start quicker and idle smoother. I ran it for about an hour doing light duty and it didn't falter.

So far, I got a new E German carb, points/condensor/cap...timed it by eyeball...and this $30 coil. I can't believe in 2006 I can leave something sit out for a decade, no more than 1/2 a tank gas ever and have it willingly come back for more work whenever I hit the starter. I can afford something newer...but how can you give up on an old horse who's willing to pull whenever you ask?!

Thanks all for all your help. I didn't change the coil before you coached me to - even tho' I thought about it - because my M-F dealer (30+yrs...) didn't think it could have been it. Thanks again.

Your experience with the coil points out that for these tractors to run and run well, everthing component has to be working correctly. I have had similiar experiences with my Fregusons.

By the way, all F-40s came from the factory with 12v systems.

I have found that the M-F dealers are not very helpful at this point for these old tractors. Sometimes I go to my M-F dealer for a part, but I try not to, and I only go to them when I know exactly what I want.

I have an F40 with a backhoe and front end loader on it. I use it at least weekly. Im sure there has been better tractors made but I don't know what they are. I am sure that they aren't painted green. Mine has been converted to 12v also and I have had 2 coils go bad in 35 years. Another strange thing happened about 5 years ago, got a miss, changed plugs, ran about 6hrs, started missing again, changed plugs, process repeated. I got tired of changing plugs every 6 hrs. Called Champion Plug. Rep said use a higher heat range plug. I think book calls for H12. I replaced with H16. That set has run fine for 5 yrs. I am gonna change them some day if I get around to it.
