What would cause a batter to exploid as mine did today. My TO 35 battery was dead so I had the charger on it, but to hurry up the process I took off the charger and jump started it. After a few minutes she started to run rough, I thought it was bad gas, after about 15 minutes the battery exploided. Any Ideas? Thanks Terry

If the battery was discharged and frozen that could cause it to explode.

When a lead acid battery is charging normally, it gives off hydrogen gas, which will explode if there is an ignition source. Once I blew the top off a battery. It was fairly new, not sulfated and not low on electrolyte. It was discharged and the alternator was charging at a high rate. I removed a spark plug wire to see if there was fire, there was fire and it ignited the hydrogen inside and outside the battery. The top blew off of at least one of the cells. I once met a man who had lost his sight in both eyes because of a battery explosion. I do not know if it was because of fragments going into the eyes or from the electrolyte.

Most likely, there was an internal connection in the battery broken loose and sparking, probably combined with a sulfated battery, and low electrolyte levels, giving off lots of hydrogen, with lots of space for it to build up.

In other words, a worn out battery.

I would agree. I had a battery several years ago in a Ford escort explode. Top split right along the sides. I guessed at the time it blew because it was low on electrolyte. There was practically no fluid (acid) thrown around under the hood and the battery was more or less dry. Never had any inking of failure. Car always started fine and showed normal charge. It blew on cranking the engine.

Be careful using the battery chargers to. Get some "gas" off the battery with a spark and it could blow just the same. Always unplug the charger before connecting or disconnecting!
