I bought a 1951 TO-20 and the conversion has been done , however it is of poor quality. The alt has only one wire from it and it goes to the amp meter. The other pole on the amp meter is wired to the starter switch. I want to install a volt meter. That is no problem. But what is the correct way to wire the alt? (delco)

From your description the Alternator is wired correctly. This is a very popular conversion for our tractors using the Delco 10si Alternator with a single wire. If you would like the wiring diagram for this system I do have it, but you do seem to have it correct as it is. You can wire it up the conventional way with two wires if you wish. In this instance the main lead from the Alternator goes to the ammeter just the same, but terminal 2 on the alternator has a loop across to the main terminal and terminal 1 on the alternator is run to the key switch (the ign. terminal), you can insert a warning light in this lead if you wish.
