Cold start ignition

I am running into a strange ignition problem. When my TO-30 is started cold the ignition cuts in and out, as noted by tach bounce for about 2 minutes. As soon as it gets a little heat in the block the symptom goes away and it runs great the rest of the day. I installed new plugs, points, condenser, cap, rotor and have checked point gap, wiring shorts and dirty connections finding nothing out of place. Has anyone had this happen to them and if so what was the cure? BTW she fires right off on @ half a turn of the starter and never completely stops running, just cuts in and out with an occasional backfire, and is stored out of the elements.

What are the ambient temperature conditions when you encounter this problem? If it's cool(below 50F) and the humidity is high, you can encounter carb icing on start up that clears up after the manifold heats up. You can see frost form on the outside of the carb where the throttle plate is near the connect flange of the manifold. If it's forming there it's because the inside air passage is even colder, so there is ice internally. I have this problem with my TO-30 under those type of atmospheric conditions and it take about 2 minutes to clear.
Since the problem goes away in a few minutes, and assuming your ignition system is delivering a fat, bluish spark, that't my best guess for what you are experiencing.

What makes you think that it is ignition? Sounds like it could be a slightly lean mixture. What happens if you add a little choke?.. does it get better? Jim

You didn't mention having replaced the spark plug wires or the coil. The wire from the cap to the coil might cause this, but my bet would be the coil itself. Mind you, the more usual complaint is that when it gets hot it starts cutting out..... ...

Yes, wires are new copper core. As to why I feel it is ignition--- tach goes from 1000 to 0 to 1000 each time it stutters (electronic autometer low rpm tach), plugs look good although I could go up one heat range, and have set both the low and high speed screws for best performance. Once I get a little heat in the block she will tick over at 400 rpm all day if needed and runs fine under full load with no transition issues such as coughing or stuttering. Thanks for the replies so far. My thinking is coil, but I have never heard of one failing cold, rather they fail when hot? I have also tried point gaps as close as 20 and as wide as 24 thoasands with no change.
