Does anyone know if a TO20 has enough power to run a 5 foot tiller?

I am in ownership of a "50 TO-20 that came with a Rotovator. It also has a Hupp over/under and a Howard. I stole it all for $1800 complete with a crankcase full of gas and a rounded off flywheel. The Howard is needed to keep the PTO spinning fast enough to turn ther tiller and the Hupp will slow the machine down to do a proper job. Howards are a rare item and do not use them to pull stumps or anything other than a tiller. Your next best bet might be another tractor posible from the enemy Ford. Wanna buy a reworked 9N? No, that won"t pull a tiller either...Hence, it"s sale.
Have a great day and a better tomorrow!

The only aux. trannies I know of that will fit your TO, & slow the drivetrain w/o slowing the pto, would be a Howard reduction unit or an Everett trencher transmission. They are both pretty rare finds, even harder to get repair parts.

Hi

In my opinion o TO-20 is not the machine for a rotovator. The ground speed in first gear is too fast...if equipped with a Sherman or Hupp auxiliary transmission in low range the PTO will be slower in same proportion to ground speed. Rotovator may be used with TO-35 FE-35 MF-35 MF-135 which have a low range transmission. I use a 5 foot with my MF-135 (Z-145 engine) and it is about the maximum size it can handle.

Just my 2¢

WOULD A SHERMAN TRANSMISSION ON A TO 30 SLOW THINGS DOWN ENOUGH TO MAKE A TILLER USEFUL??

Well, it could depend on the Sherman, but there's a second problem.

I know its true in the TO-20 / 8N that the PTO shaft is driven off the second shaft in the transmission, so slowing down the transmission slows down the PTO shaft. That doesn't help the tiller.

There were at least three different Shermans, an over/straight, an over/under/straight, and an under/straight. The over ranges won't help, the under would help with a live PTO, but not the TO PTO I think.

Not sure about the Sherman on a to30, but while some of the underdrive tranny's on the Fords WILL slow the speed down--they also slow the p.t.o. as well--thus not making things much better for tilling. I have a 5 ft. tiller on my to35, with a high/low selector and low 1 is perfect for tilling. I'm not sure what the answer is for a to30. But I concur 100% with the other reply that 1st gear is too fast for tilling on a 20 or 30.

There may have been one made for it, but it will be marginal. The worse problem will be that ground speed will be too high in first gear. That's a standard problem in nearly all tractors without a hydro transmission or a creeper gear.
