My brakes had quit working on my TO 30 so I took the drums off and the axle seals are leaking causeing the problem. Could someone tell me how to change the axle seals? Do I just take the bolts loose on the backing plate of the brakes and pull the axle out? or is there something else that holds the axle shaft in place. I just changed the axle seals on my Ford Ranger and there was a pinnion shaft and C-locks on the differential that held the axle in place. I dont have a repair manual for the TO 30 to show me how to do this.

Removing the retaining collar is relatively easy -drill a 1/4" hole in it and then 'split' it with a chisel. It will slide right off. Removing the bearing is a different story. As John UK says, anything less than a 30 ton press won't do it. Took mine to machine shop and they couldn't get them off with their 50 ton press (they actually bent the hub). I had to torch mine off.

Quality replacement bearings aren't cheap. You'll require Timken Cone 3795, Cup 3720 - about $40.00 each side.

Phil(VA)'s advise on the shims is good; however, I found that I had to re-shim when I replaced my bearings. Perhaps there was a few thou difference between the old and new.

Yes the axle will slide out after you remove backing plate, etc., as you indicate. There are two seals, the inner one being easy to replace yourself, and the outer one being pressed on the shaft as John says. You can take the axle to a machine shop to do that for you, if you wish. Probably less than $50 per axle including new seal and bearing. Notice shims when you remove the axle, and replace exactly as you find them. When tightening back up, with both wheels off ground, if you turn one wheel forward and other goes forward, they are too tight. If other doesn't move, they are too loose. If other goes backward (opposite way), they are shimmed just right. You should get a manual, however, for general purposes as well as this. If shoes aren't too bad you might be able to clean them, but if not, make sure you do axle job correctly as new shoes are somewhat expensive for the 30, for some reason.

This is a major operation and requires the bearing hubs being pulled off the shafts. This needs a puller/press that is capable of up to 30 tons. The collar holding everything on the shaft has to be drilled and then split, then the hub is pulled, new seals fitted, new collars heated to cherry red and dropped onto the shaft, then tapped into place quickly before it cools. Refit to tractor using new gaskets either side of the brake back plates, the shims go next to the axle housing. If you need more detail on this email me at:- fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk
