What would make a distributor bounce up so hard that it bends the bracket holding it in place everytime I try to crank it? I thought it was 180 degrees out, but when I advanced the rotor it still bounces, backfires and then it broke the bolt holding the bracket to the block. Help...

RonW nailed it Your cam drive gear is loose and allowing the cam to move foreward.

The nut on the end of the camshaft is loose. You will need to pull the front cover and tighten it up. The cam is traveling back and forth and the gear in mesh with the dist. gear is causing it to jump around. I fought this for a while with my TO-35, till Big Dean or John(UK) one told me what to do.

Thank you Ron W and Jerry/MT. It sounds easy enough even for a non-mechanic like me. You know...I almost got rid of this tractor a few months back, but folks like you on this forum changed my mind and I have really enjoyed tinkering so far. Thank God for this forum and folks like you that don"t mind sharing your knowledge with naive city boys like me. If you think of anything else I may need to know or do while I"m in there please holler. Thanks again, guys.

I just got done doing that very thing on my TO-20. I had the same symptoms as yours plus the govenor rod bounced back and forth. Sure enough, the nut was loose. The flat locking washer that was supposed to under the nut was missing and my dealer said it was no longer available, so I put mine on with a little blue locktite. You're right about the simplicity of working on a Fergy, but a manual is a still good thing to have. Good Luck.
