12-Volt Coil

I converted my TO20 to 12-volt a few months ago and it ran great for a while, but now it won't start. With help from this board I think the problem has been narrowed down to a ballast resister that is not reducing the voltage to the coil. Presumably, the excess voltage damaged the coil (6-volt) or points. Now that I think I need a new coil, should I get a 12-volt one and dispense with the resistor? If I do that, will the points be ok with the extra voltage? Thanks in advance.

Thanks to you guys for your help - I am electrically challenged, so I appreciate your information. Since I apparently need a coil anyway, I think I will get a 12-volt and not deal with the resistor. I will let you know how it turns out.

Don, a real 12 volt coil has the reistance built into the coil to limit point current to the proper value. The resisitor that you got with your 12v conversion kit was supposed to do the same thing for your 6 volt coil. Since it didn't, the point current was nearly doubled which can damage your coil and the points. It is not true that neither coil will not damage the points. It is only true that the 6V coil with a properly functioning resistor will not damage the points when empressed with 12 V.

There will be no problem with the points no matter what type of coil you use.
