I'm looking for brake drums for a TO-20, 1950 vint. Will drums from anything else fit?? Has anyone used the sure seal replacement for rear axel seal leakage and what can you tell me about it?

Larry, You didn't say why you needed to replace your drums, but if they arn't too badly worn you can have them re-surfaced at any auto parts store or machine shop that has a brake lathe. If you need drums try TIPS parts and salvage at 1-800-545-9967. They are in Lawrenceburg TN. but can ship anywhere. I have sure seals on my TO-20 and they work great. 9N Ford seals fit . You can get them from this site, New Holland dealer, TSC.

Larry, I don't know about sourcing alternate drums. I have installed sure seals on my TO-20 and can tell you it is relatively easy, and they work just fine. There is no good reason to go through the trouble to tear-down the axle & hub to replace the original seal....unless you just want to for the learning experience.

I have plugged all my tips for TO-20 brakes and sure seals into my web site. Rather than explain it all here, just check out this link.

George thanks for the info. it is a big help I think I'll try the sure seals. After looking At the picture I think there is already one on the left side, I think I'll replace it to. I think jusat as you stated the main problem is likely the hub gaskets leaking into the brakes. I replaced the brakes and had the drums turned about 2 yrs. ago. I didn't think the torqueing of the hub bolts was that critical so I just tightened them normally. I guess expierence is the best teacher unfortunately it usually gives the test bsfore the lesson. Thanks Again Larry

Larry, thanks for following up and letting us know how your brake job is going. We all learn from each others experiences. You have probably read John's post below about those hub nuts backing off over time. John gave me the same advise when I did my brakes, I installed new lock nuts and added a drop of low strength threadlocker to each one when I bolted the hubs back onto the axle to try to prevent that problem.

I love your line about "experience is the best teacher..etc". That sure is the the truth!

Not only do you need to torque them correctly, you need to check them every couple of months as they do get slack with forward and reversing, once they are slack they wear away the paper gasket which makes it slacker still and when you tighten them up they don't seal any more.
