Considering a TO35

I am considering buying a TO35 with a Standard Motors Diesel. Clutch, brakes, transmission are good, oil pressure barely leaves the dot at normal after running over an hour, and that is at idle. I have read horror stories about starting these. After 10 sec. of heat it starts right up, although it is summer. This one has the one glow plug in the manifold. Tires are good. There is a small amount of blue smoke when it is first cranked that goes away in a few seconds, but there is some grey smoke while it is running, mostly when the engine is pulling hard. The price is 2200. I have seen alot of 35"s with the perkins engine, but this is the first I"ve run across with the Standard. Is that a fair price?, and if the grey smoke is a problem what am I looking at cost wise to fix it? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Just some general comments regarding diesel engines.Your blue smoke problem at start up is probably due to oil that has leaked by the valve stems and burned on start up. I would not consider that a major problem as long as it only occurs at start up. The grey smoke under high load sounds normal because the injection pump is fueling near the max rate and there is usually some unburned fuel at these conditions. You should not need any manifold heat to start up under warm summer conditions to try starting without the manifold heat. I am not familiar with the specifics of the Standard engine so I don't feel qualified to make any specific comments on it.
For $2200, if the rest of the tractor is as good as the engine sounds you've got a good buy. I don't know about parts availability for that engine but maybe John(UK) will have some comments as he is quite knowledgable about the Standard engines.

I doubt if it will start without heat from cold, a cold start is not one of its best attributes on this 23c engine. The grey smoke is quite normal, it shouldn't be there but often it is, very often it is injectors want servicing or the valves want a regrind, but if is starts as you say then leave it alone until it gets troublesome. As Jerry says the blue smoke is most likely oil down the valve guides and nothing to worry about, there are no oil seals on the guides and if they are worn then some oil will leak down, but it isn't a problem. If you buy it, email me for the correct information on how to operate the hydraulic system.

Thank you both for the input, I will probably go ahead and buy the tractor. I am a little leary of that engine, but I haven't seen a later model one with the Perkins sell anywhere close to that price range. The owner is throwing in the owners, parts, and service manual for it as well which I guess makes the price a little more attractive.
