51 TO-20 runs bad when under load

As of late my 1951 TO-20 is having problems. It starts up, runs fine. It runs fine without the 6 foot mowing deck engaged. It even runs ok moving the grass for the first 10 or so min. After that, when the deck hits taller grass, or the tractor goes up a hill it starts to miss horribly, smells like fuel bad and feels like its running on 1 cylinder. It wants to totally bog out and die until I disengage the deck or get off the hill then it runs ok. Seems to be an issue with getting a load on the engine while hot. I drained the old gas last week thinking that was it. Doing the same thing with new gas. I am guessing this is ignition related? Any idea the culprits?

I appreciate all the suggestions and will be using them all to follow up with. Haven't had a chance to look for the problem with life getting in the way. Hopefully this weekend. I was able to finish mowing my grass this past weekend using less throttle than I usually use. However when it hit heavy grass it wanted to bog down briefly, then ran fine again.

What did you find? in reply to Jason L, 07-29-2006 06:51:11
Have you got it running right yet? What fixed it?

I have the same tractor and have run into the same thing; what I have found is that my plugs foul out badly because the engine needs new rings and sleaves. About 1 hrs of heavy bushhoging is all I can get, if that much out of the plugs before I have to remove and clean, so I made the plug gap much wider, and that seams to help for now! Gene

Check the ignition first to eliminate that as the first possibility. In order for a spark ignition engine in reasonable mechanical shape to run properly it needs the proper fuel/air ratio and a hot spark at the right time.
Check the spark by pulling the high tension lead of the center of the distributor cap, hold the metal terminal near a good ground and try a start. Yu should see a FAT, BLUISH, SPARK. Anything else means that the ignition is not working properly. It could be point condition and/or gap, it could be a bad coil, a bad ignition switch, bad wiring/connection, bad condensor, worn distributor shaft/bushing, etc. The best time to check it out is when it dies or starts to perform badly. If your spark is good, you need to check the initial ignition timing AND the centrifugal advance mechanism. For that you need a timing light. If you have a fat, bluish, spark and the timing is correct and the advance mechanism is functioning, then look to the fuel system.
Open the drain plug at the bottom of the carb and make sure that, with the tank valve open , gas comes out of the bowl drain like a cow peein' on a flat rock.. It must do so continuously for as long as you have the plug out, the tank valve is open and youhave fuel in the tank. (Hold a large container under the carb to catch the $3+ /gallon fuel.) if it doesn't pour out continuously, check the filters ; the "secret filter" in the fuel elbow at the carb, and the filter above the sediment bowl and on the fuel inlet inthe tank, if it has a screen. Check the fuel cap vent to make sure it's not clogged. Clean out any crud you find. If it still does not gush out , you'll have to pull the carb and check the fuel bowl for crud and the float valve /float setting to see what the problem is.
Hope this helps.

sounds like fuel supply to me in reply to Jason L, 07-29-2006 06:51:11
I would check the electrical stuff as suggested, but I would not be surprised if this was a fuel supply deficiency. When under load, it needs more fuel. If the fuel filter is partially plugged or there is a blockage in the line someplace, it will run ok as long a the fuel need is low, but it will not get enough gas to run right under load.

I would check the fuel filter first.

I would suggest looking at the ignition first:
1) check plugs and set gap to .025 to 0.27
2) check point condition replace if badly pitted, if points are replaced be sure to replace the condensor set points to .022.
3) While dist. cap is off look at condition of rotor contacts if corroded scrape clean. Look for carbon arcing inside cap, if present I would replace it.
4) Check for good spark, pull center lead from dist. hold 1/4 from ground and turn starter, spark should be fat and blue. Be sure all connections are tight and clean especially if using 6v system.

If spark is yellow check points, condersor, and coil. Would not move on to any thing else until ignition system has been thouroughly looked at. Hope this helps still learning myself

Check the centre shaft in the distributor, will it move from side to side and open and close the points when it does that, if it does the bearings are shot. You could also try a new condenser, they can really play tricks at times and you can't test them, so change it.
