Check the ignition first to eliminate that as the first possibility. In order for a spark ignition engine in reasonable mechanical shape to run properly it needs the proper fuel/air ratio and a hot spark at the right time. Check the spark by pulling the high tension lead of the center of the distributor cap, hold the metal terminal near a good ground and try a start. Yu should see a FAT, BLUISH, SPARK. Anything else means that the ignition is not working properly. It could be point condition and/or gap, it could be a bad coil, a bad ignition switch, bad wiring/connection, bad condensor, worn distributor shaft/bushing, etc. The best time to check it out is when it dies or starts to perform badly. If your spark is good, you need to check the initial ignition timing AND the centrifugal advance mechanism. For that you need a timing light. If you have a fat, bluish, spark and the timing is correct and the advance mechanism is functioning, then look to the fuel system. Open the drain plug at the bottom of the carb and make sure that, with the tank valve open , gas comes out of the bowl drain like a cow peein' on a flat rock.. It must do so continuously for as long as you have the plug out, the tank valve is open and youhave fuel in the tank. (Hold a large container under the carb to catch the $3+ /gallon fuel.) if it doesn't pour out continuously, check the filters ; the "secret filter" in the fuel elbow at the carb, and the filter above the sediment bowl and on the fuel inlet inthe tank, if it has a screen. Check the fuel cap vent to make sure it's not clogged. Clean out any crud you find. If it still does not gush out , you'll have to pull the carb and check the fuel bowl for crud and the float valve /float setting to see what the problem is. Hope this helps.
