I use a woods RD72. Its a 6ft. rear discharge. Weighs between 600 and 700lbs depending on which piece of Woods literature you read. Weight is not a problem since these things ride on casters, not suspended from the rear of the tractor. I generally mow in third gear. My TO-20 has no problems with it.

Mine works! in reply to bad_bo_ti, 07-13-2006 16:00:20
Got a six-foot Pittsburgh (Taylor/Pittsburg?) that works fine behind my TO-30. And like John(UK) says below, its a finish mower, not a brush hog.
dll

In my opinion, the major thing to consider is the weight of the mower, not just the width. the weight effects stability and steering as well as braking but the width primarily effects the power requirements (even though weight increases with width, it increases more with the duty rating). If the mower is too heavy and carried on the three point hitch,(and some of the heavy duty mowers are over a 1000 pounds @ 6 foot width),you will have a problem keeping the front wheels on the ground unless you ballast the front end of the tractor. The other problem is that a good hydraulic system onthe TO--20,-30 will only lift about 750-800 pounds If the mower weighs less than 600-650 pounds, you can probably handle it except going up steep hills.
Power wise there are ways to use the mower to use the mower with the power available. If you are cutting short grass, it's not an issue. If the grass is over the hood, you might have to raise the mower as suggested by someone else or cut half widths, etc.

I curretly use a 6ft. Woods finnish mower behind my 1959 TO-35 Special (just a great Tractor) with very good results, as my lawn is about 7 acres. My neighbor tried to use a 6ft behind a Ford 8N,and it was just too much mower, with poor results.

I used a Woods 6' finish mower behind my 54 TO30 and it does just fine. If i'm mowing stuff that is taller than 12" I have to raise and up some and cut it in two passes.

as long as what you are mowing is not more than ankle high it will work ok.

Quite right, ankle high is all that you use a FINISH mower for, anything more than that is into rough stuff. If you get a lot of grass under a finish mower it is harder to drive than a rough-cut.
