6v or 12v????

How can I tell if a generator and/or starter are 6v or 12v if not marked? Will stamping numbers tell? On the starters, can I use a 6v battery then a 12v battery and jumper cables to test?
How will I know about the pos. neg. ground?
I have access to a couple of both that are in alright shape, but nothing is marked/
\THanks in advance. Mark

This probably won't help at all but... The positive battery post is a little wider than the negative so if there are still battery cables on the tractor (can you see the tractor or are these parts in a box somewhere?), the larger hole went to the positive battery post. If that cable is bolted to the frame, then it's positive ground and I would gamble that the generator is 6V.

It should be possible to determine the current polarization of the generator (can someone verify this?) with a volt meter by spinning it the right direction (probably by hand would work) and paying attention to the sign of the output voltage. If it outputs negative voltage, then it probably came off a positive ground system and is probably 6V.

Whatever you do, do not connect a 12 volt battery with cables to your 6 volt battery to help it start better. If you want, you can remove the batteryposts on the 6 volt battery, and only use the 12 volt battery. Never ever mix them. That will in fact be the last time you mix a 6 and 12 volt battery. You will most likely survive it, but you will hardly forget it.

Opening the generators might tell you what voltage it is if you have other generators you already know the voltage on by comparing turns and wire thickness.

On the starters that is more difficult.

On a starter there is no such things as positive and negative, wire them as you please, they will go in the same direction anyway.

Do you see any amperage on the generators ? that may tell the voltage too in turn. I mean, originally a TE 20 had 17 amps I think on 6 volts. When they moved to 12 volts, it gave 11 amps only, and now when they have started using the Ford style generator, it often gives 22 amps and that is 12 volts.

Did you become any wiser ?

Bill

Thanks, guys.
I wasn't going to mix batteries in parrallel, I was trying to see if I could begin with a 6v battery and try to make starter jump and spin---if strong, wondered it that would be a 6volt'er---If nothing, I thought I'd try same with a 12 volt battery. Interesting about the amps--never knew they dropped amps, makes sense though with bigger voltage. I may take to a shop and see what they say. Unfortunately these are all setting on shelf with no wires attached. Thanks again, Mark
