Coolant overflow

I replaced at least a quart of coolant on my gas TO-35 only to see it push back out the overflow after running for a few minutes. The temp gage read 180*. I checked the belt and core fins, replaced the stat (160*) and rad cap, refilled it and it's still coming out the overflow tube. What could be going on here?
Thanks,

Roger

I top off the old Fergie every few weeks as it "seeps" coolant at the WP. My young daughter asked why it "throws up" green stuff sometimes. As mentioned, if you fill to overflow, it will "throw up" the cold/hot difference until maximum heat expansion.

Hey PB,

Thanks for your feedback.
It seems to be under control and running fine.

If you filled it when the engine was cold the water will expand when it got hot so it will run out of the overflow. To check that it isn"t anything more sinister like has been mentioned (cracked head or head gasket) don"t add any water to fill it right up again, just run it and see if it pumps more water out again, if it does there is something wrong, if it doesn"t then it is ok. Do keep your eye on the temperature though while you test it, once you know for sure that it isn"t going to leak anymore you should be ok.

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply.
I'll be keeping an eye on it as you suggested although from what I gather, this is likely normal.

Roger

How high did you fill it? These old radiators incorporate expansion space for the coolant so they only need to be filled to the top of the core. When the coolant expands due to heating, it fills up the extra space and any excess flows out the overflow. Try filling it to the top of the radiator core and see if it doesn't retain the coolant. Todays cars use an expansion tank made out of cheap plastic to cut down on the more expensive radiator metal and volume instead of designing the radiator to hold the expansion overflow. It also keeps air out of the cooling system to prevent rust and crud from forming and maximizes the cooling capability.

Hi Jerry;

I refilled it to the very top. I'll check to see if it holds when just covering the top of the core.
Thank you,

Either a cracked head or leakig head gasket.

Hi Woodache;

Thanks for the reply.
Could you explain that a bit? I'm having trouble "seeing" the cause and effect.
Thank you,

Roger

You dont have a problem! Fill it to the top of the core and thats all you have to do. I filled mine right to the top before I new the proper setting and it would spill out the overflow everytime. I ignore it now and the tractor runs perfectly. The temp as you indicate is right on the money

Hi Barry,

I think you're right- I may not have a problem. When I saw that it was low on coolant, I remembered all the various posts over the years regarding cracked cylinders or heads and I may have overreacted. I will be keeping a close eye on it nonetheless.
Thanks,

Roger

This is perhaps typical. When cold the coolant is going to take up less volume than when hot, so if you fill your radiator cold some is going to get dumped when it expands.

A quart sounds excessive, but it might be normal. I'm sure an expert will know better.

Hi Roger;

There's that echo again! ;-)
Yeah, I kinda thought that a quart+ was more than normal. Maybe not, though.
Thanks for the input.
