When i pull the distributer away from the engine block while running the engine runs good, when i let go it misses. Does this mean i need a whole new one?

You probably don't need a "new" distributor. First, make sure that the distributor hold down bolt is tight because a loose distributor will cause this problem.
If the hold down is tight, then the shaft and/or the bushing are probably worn and so they need replacement. A better test is to take the cap, rotor, and dust cover off the distributor and crank the engine til the points close. Then push radially (from the side) on the the distributor shaft. There should be virtually no motion of the shaft or the points.
I had one on my TO-30 that was so worn that when I performed this test, the points opened up 0.030"!!! Needless to say it ran ratty and the spark was really weak. I'm surprised it ran at all.
Found an outfit to rebuild it for a $100 and it runs lie a champ. Saved enough on the rebuild over the price of a rebuilt distributor that I put an electronic ignition on it.
