Okay... now I am ready to order my engine kit... I have a 1954 TO-30 (z129) with the original thrust washer/shim setup on the crank.. I read in the parts section of this site that the main bearings (that yt sells) are for FLANGED thrust bearings... I think that I need the same type that I have (thrust washer and shims)... Will the FLANGED bearing work? What is the true story here???? Jim

Yes, the first tractor I overhauled at age 20 was a TO-30. The second was a TO-20 and yes they have different cranks and thrust absorption design.

The kits are reasonable in price and get you "everything you need" but make mistakes like this. Cultivate a relatioship with a good motor parts store that handles farm and other off-road parts too. They will have parts manuals from the different specialty manufacturers -- piston rings, bearings, carburetor kits -- and can get a lot of different things. Their listings will show that there are different part numbers for TO-20 and TO-30 main bearing sets.

I find that I can get lots of things through the local parts house cheaper than at the Agco dealer.

Jim, My Copy of the Ferguson Shop Manual states that the TO-30 does not use a flanged thrust bearing like the TO-20. As you know, the crankshaft thrust is reacted by a thrust washer system rather than a flanged main bearing. The other difference is the inserts for the center main bearing has a special hole that registers with a hole in the block that supplies oil to the camshaft from the center main bearing. Guess you need to find someone who has the right kit for the TO-30 because anyone that has a main bearing for the -30 has the wrong part.

JIM MY HEART GOES OUT TO YOU. I HAVE JUST GONE THROUGH THE SAME THING ON MY TO30. I DISSASEMBLED IT FOR A COMPELTE ENGINE OVERHAUL IN JANUARY OF THIS YEAR. I FINALLY GOT WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE CORRECT BEARINGS WITH NEW THRUST WASHERS YESTERDAY. I ORDERED AN ENGINE KIT FROM ONE OF THE ONLINE TRACTOR PART GUYS AND EVERYTHING FIT FINE UNTIL I GOT TO THE MAIN BEARINGS. THEY WERE THE FLANGED FRONT MAIN TYPE. THESE I HAVE FOUND OUT, ARE TO20 BEARINGS. THE TRACTOR PARTS GUY SAID THAT THEY WOULD WORK.WRONG!! THE FERGUSON SERVICE MANUAL STATES THAT THE CRANKSHAFTS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE BETWEEN THE TO20 AND TO30 BECAUSE OF THE WAY THAT THE THRUST IS HANDLED( FLANGED VS NON FLANGED FRONT MAIN). THEREFORE TO20 MAINS CANNOT BE USED IN THE TO30 AND VISA VERSA. I FINALLLY GOT TIRED OF BEING TOLD THAT I WAS ALL WET AND LOOKED THE APPLICATION UP IN AN OLD FEDERAL MOGAL SERVICE MANUAL. I THEN ORDERED THE BEARINGS FROM A LOCAL REBUILDER. I GOT THEM IN A WEEK. THEY WERE NOT CHEAP BUT I BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE CORRECT. IF YOU NEED THE PART NUMBERS SHOOT ME AN EMAIL AND I'LL LOOK THEM UP FOR YOU.
GOOD LUCK
DAVE
