Can anyone here tell me what these holes are/were for? I'm sure they had a specific function at one time and was wondering if anyone could tell me what it was. If not, has anyone seen holes like this before? This tractor is in California and was bought new here. Thanks for any information.

Hart..... ...the fine silt of the lower Fresno valley really creates a dust cloud that gitts captured by yer Fergie (and N-Ford) hood. This was very common in cotton fields which used mechanical shovels and hoe-blades for weed control before the invention of chemical weed killers. Yer hole in the hood is the result of one attemt to extend the oilbath air intake ABOVE the dusty hood so your engine oilbath doesn't turn into grinding compound and wear-out yer piston rings. It wasn't uncommon to have to rebuild tractor engines every winter on cotton farms 'cuz they was plain wore out..... ....Dell

Your supplemental photos are 1-version of a "cyclone" air pre-filter. Heres some other aircleaner photos for you to think about. The 2-smaller boltholes were probably bracket braces. third party image third party image

What is the unit in front of the oil bath air cleaner? Check under the instrument panel and see if there is a rubber tube connecting the oil bath air cleaner to the air intake vent on the dash. It is possible the large hole was for a air intake pipe for the unit in front of the oil bath air cleaner. Perhaps the oil bath cleaner was bypassed in favor of the other. Who knows. Somewhat of a mystery.

Lift the hood, and this is what you see. Doesn't look stock to me. Does anyone recognize this piece of equipment?:

The same thing from the side, for a better view:

This view shows the air intake hole in the dash that is not in use:

Lastly, is the dealer plate, just cause it's cool that it is still attached:

Thanks for your input. I will be posting and asking many more questions here real soon!

Paul,

The plate is a dealer identification plate, presumably from the original seller of the tracor. There is one on each side of the hood in the same spot. It says "Sanger Farm Supply" and gives the address and phone number. Funny thing is, the phone number is only four digits(!) which was apparently how they did it back then.

Sanger is a small town southeast of Fresno, CA. I already checked and the company is no longer there.....:(

Thanks for the replies!

Air precleaner? in reply to J. Hart, 06-06-2006 23:30:59
The big one looks like it would have been for a precleaner/prescreener for the air filter. That was a common item back then. The smaller ones could have been for a grease gun or almost anything.

It may have something to do with the metal plate attached to the hood above the "Ferguson 35" sign. What does that plate say?
