Fergerson TO-20 Alternator Question ???

What type of alternator does the Fergerson TO-20 use ? I just bought a TO-20 and and a new battery for it got it home and hooked up my finish mower and started mowing. After about 2 hours the engine dies and the battery is dead, it wont even crank. I jump started it off my deisel truck and got it running again but it dies shortly afterwards. I havent hooked a voltage meter up to it yet but hindsight tells me the alternator is bad. It is a 12vt. system and appears the alternator is a GM low voltage type alternator with a plug with two wires comming out of the top and one wire out of the back. On the plug one of the wires goes directly to a silver colored solenoid thing-a-ma-giggy and the other wire is wire capped off. Not being mechanically inclined this solenoid has several wires connecting to it including the postive to the battery. What type of alternator does the Fergerson TO-20 use ? and since I'm not mechanically inclined who, in or around the Fort Worth/Lake Worth area would be a trusted mechanic for hydraulic and electrical related issues ?

As previously suggested you can remove the alternator and have it tested for free. But from your description I would say that it is not correctly wired and suspect that you will find that the alternator is good. I am going to email you a wiring diagram of how a 12volt conversion should be wired.

TO-20"s came with 6V systems that used a generator. Many have been converted to 12V. This appears to be the case for your tractor. Take the alternator off. Then take it to your local car parts store and have them test it. This is a free service all "Auto Zone" "Pep Boys" etc. do. If the alternator is bad have them get you a similar one to put on.

As all 12v conversons individual jobs, there is no simple answer.

Jeff

Terry..... ..that short silver looking "round blob" is an alternator. Generators are almost always longer and slender. While you can have 6-volt alternators specially made, they are NOT EFFICENT nor CHEAP. Most 12-volt conversions are done using the cheap Delco 10SI with built-in solidstate voltage regulator. I know 8-ways to convert to 12-volts and they all work. I am NOT a fan of the seemingly desireable 1-wire alternator conversion for tractor duty because you haffta jazz yer cold tractor engine to about 1800rpms before it starts charging. The more complicated 3-wire conversion that God and General Motors Delco designed starts charging at about 600rpm..... ...respectfullly, Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reason. That said, I haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6-volt tractor and I know how to do it right, the first time.

Thank You Dell in reply to Dell (WA), 06-06-2006 00:13:11
it's a 12 vt. system using a Delco 10SI alternator. I bought a rebuilt Delco 10SI alternator from Cabes Starter and Alternator in North Fort Worth and exchanged the toasted alternator for a core. $ 60.54 and now I'm fixing to wire it up. Theres not that many wires to this set-up, maybe 3-4 wires total cause there are no head or tail lamps. I'm going to add a oil pressure guage and tempeture guage and send my nephew back to Tractor Supply in Decature where he purchased a 6 vt. battery and have him exchange it for a 12 vt. battery and if the stars and moon will align correctly for me this week just maybe I can have it ready to take back out to my nephews house and get him off of my IH 455 front end loader before he breaks something expensive on that tractor..
