Charged my battery, again, and while my TO-20 was running i pecked on the voltage regulator, and the gauge would go to + then a little while later, while I was bush hogging, would go back to -. Also, when it was on the + it was better when I had her wound up. I put this voltage regulator on last summer, could it go bad this soon? How much give should the fan belt have to my generator, would a loose belt cause this?

Thanks

bad regulators in reply to Raye Ann, 05-16-2006 07:42:24
I have bought 3 of those regulators for 6 volt pos gnd systems. All worked for awhile, then slowly started to fail, usually within a month.

I put an old original one on that looked like crap and it works perfectly.

To increase charging on the aftermarket ones, pull down the tab where the spring is on the coil with the smaller wire winding. Don't move it much, a small change can easily cause it to over charge. Even this doesn't last long in my experience.

My luck with the after market ones is terrible. I hope yours is better. But I would recommend getting a used original

The generator will not be charging all the time, it is switched on and off by the regulator as the battery needs charge. When you first start up it needs some charge as you have used the starter and taken some charge from the battery so it needs replacing and that is why it is on +, after it has been running a while and the battery is charged it will go to 0 if it goes to - that means that something is draining the charge from the battery. The belt should not slip at all, it needs to be tight and the correct width and the same profile (shape) as the pulleys. If the bottom of the Vee in any of the pulleys is bright and polished that means that the belt is slipping and that it isn't wide enough for the job. When you tighten the belt it should have a deflection of about 1/2" on the longest run of the belt (water pump to crankshaft) otherwise there will be slippage.

How do I detect what is draining the battery? I have no lights connected yet, I'm replacing them, they have been unwired for some time.
Thanks

To make sure that it isn't just the ammeter reading incorrectly, turn off the ignition and then remove the main battery lead, just wipe the terminal on that lead across that battery terminal and see if there are any slight sparks between them, that is if you don't have a test meter, if you do, remove the lead and fix one terminal from test meter to battery terminal and fix the other lead from test meter to battery lead, now you will get the rate of discharge if there is one. Be sure to get the terminals the correct way around. As everything is off when you turn off the ignition you should get no drain at all. If you are getting a drain then I would go for the Regulator being wrong and get it tested, that is favourite but it may be something else, could be a wire frayed and touching somewhere, but if it was usually it will be a big drain.

Why does tapping on the voltage reg effect the meter so?

Inside the regulator are some spring loaded contacts, when you tap on the regulator the vibration is moving the contacts.
