A while back, I posted on a problem with my TO-20....it suddenly (while running) started to be extremely lean. It needed choke to keep running, especially at lower rpms.

I thought I probably got some dirt in the idle jet. However, it seemed like all the passages and jets looked fine when I took it apart.

I got lots of suggestions. I checked these out and they were not the answer. I did buy a new reproduction Marvel Schebler carb (off the link from this web site). I installed that and the now the tractor runs much better and will idle at 700 rpm. I think it might even be lower when fully warm and when I finished fine tuning the idle jet and main jet.

I did notice that 700-800 rpm, the idle mixture jet does not seem to have much effect.

At that speed the engine isn't actually idling, it is running on the main jet. check the linkage for the throttle that it is allowing the carburettor throttle to close fully or it is up to the stop as you have it set. It may just be the linkage that is preventing it from idling and it may also be the governor needs resetting as it is all inter-connected and if the governor is not right then the carb. linkage could be held open slightly.

I did adjust the linkage so that it does come to a hard stop. The engine was not fully warm and it started to run a bit ragged when set below 700. So I thought I would warm it up fully before setting the idle speed and mixture.

Where are you located in the UK? I worked for an English pharmaceutical company and spent a good part of my working life in the UK, mostly in Kent but also at sites near Welwyn, and Cork, Ireland etc. I never saw a Ferguson in Ireland but I saw many in Kent . I used to go to the plowing matches and Fergusons were always well represented there.

You do need to get it hot before you set the carb as that is how the engine works "hot" so you need to set it at working temperature, if you do it when it is not fully hot it will change its tune as it gets hotter. If it starts to run ragged as you say, check for air leaks at the carb mounting and the manifold to head gasket. Unless it is an ignition fault, what you think about that..I live in the North West of the UK between Liverpool and Manchester used to be lots of grey Ferguson around here. You surprise me that you didn't see any in Ireland, there are a lot there now you only have to look at the Forums to see how many questions come from there.
