Trying to remove the camshaft. I have the two thrust washer retainer bolts out and the camshaft is loose and moves forward about 3/8 of an inch but is still retained by something. It won't come any farther. Is this the thrust washer? Is it stuck? What next? By the shop manual, it seems like it should come right out but I don't have the parts book. Any thoughts? Jim in OH.

Just for future information, it was the lifters that were the problem. And anyone who has done this would already know this but.... these lifters in the Z129 ONLY come out the bottom. They are mushroom shaped with the big ends on the bottom. YOu have to take out the camshaft to get them out. and even though the engine was upside down, several were dragging in their bore enough that they did not fall and would not allow the camshaft bearings to clear. I bent a right angle into a piece of metal (to get around the cam) and used it to push the lifters all the way to the top and the cam came out like a charm.... I think that it would be rather difficult to take the cam out if the engine were not upside down... Has anybody ever taken the cam out of a Z129 without taking the engine out? Jim

Second thought... It probably is the lifters. I didn't consider that the top lobe position may not be high enough to push them far enough.. which of course it is not or the lobes would not fit through the bearings... my bad! Thanks.. Jim

Distributor is out and I completely rotated the camshaft while engine is upside down (on a stand, head is off) to push them out of the way. [Also, it doesn't move far enough to be a lifter...only about 3/8 inch.] Jim
