Folks, I just purchased a 2 row corn planter and she is a bute for her age. It all works and it is not beat up. No welds or anything and the tag is on it. Tag says: Type 4RO B60 and the serial # is 4980. I would like to know more about it and hopefully find a manual. I have never used one but will after I get her painted up. Boxes are in great shape. Any help would be great.
Eric

I don't have all my books avaible now for all model information but I can give you a lot of items to check. First model was a commen frame unit with the 2 spoke press wheels on a common axle with one chain driving off the axle up to a jackshaft with the gearing for both the seed bokes and the fertilizer units. Second model was a tool bar planter and 2 different types of tool bar were used, in this one bar had the markers fastened to brackeds that clamped to the tool bar while the second had the brackets molded into the ends of the tool bar. now to complicate things further there were to models of seed units that could be put on either tool bar. The one that I have never seen had a spoke one piece press wheel that each unit drove with a chain from press wheel to seed unit, also a 2 chain setup from other side of press wheel to drive fertilizer unit. the next type is what I had and it has a pressed steel press wheel made in 2 halves that was adjustable for width by adding or removing spacers from inside the wheel, then it had a V-belt drive for the planter unit on the left side of the wheel and the pully on the press wheel drive was adjustable in width to make a smaller or larger diameter pully to get your seed spacing and on opposide side (and I did not have this) was the same 2 chain setup to drive the fertilizer that the spoke wheel unit used. Do you realize that the planter is unique in that the drive on the bottom of the seed box is a run in oil drive unlike all other planrers that all the gears in the drive are out in the open. No mater what planter it is, it is a sought after collectors item. I do have the cell dimmencions and what they are for in my book. Nothing that I have shows a flat band around the press wheel as shown in the posted photo. If you can send me several good photos by email I may be able to tell you what model planter you have, would need of end of tool bar with marker mounted and drive off of press wheel. Tool bar is one model, fertilizer is a nouther model and the anouther model for seed units.

I just bought a Ferguson 3 pt. 2-row corn planter that I will use with my model 50 MHF.Type D PO A20 W/ A RO B60 fertilizer attachment. Looks like the picture from Jeff-oh but has concave wheels.Has 2 chains on each side as you describe yours.Doesn't have a lever for side markers(missing?).Would appreciate any info. you have or can share resources for manuals-parts-settings for machine-etc.Mine also in good condition after being shed-stored for several years.

Leroy, what is the oil drive you mentioned. I went out and found the Ferguson tag on the riser that the top link hooks on. Left the numbers at home and sent wife a note to send them to me. Will update tonight when I get them...I'm thinking AOP21 (or in diff. order) but the second number was 5144..markers on each end are clamped to the tool bar and the seed pots do have charts inside that look brand new. One has a scratch through it where you can tell it hit the side of the pot. Springs still there and tight holding the lids. Eric

The age would be 1947 to 1957 as those were the years Ferguson was in production, after 1957 the implements that were in the ferguson lineup that were kept were all painted red and had the Massey-Ferguson tag on them. The run in oil is the bottom of the seed hoppers drive, I can't remember off hand how to check or refill but you should be able to figure it out if you take the seed box off like you were going to dump seed out of them as it is the shaft that comes in from the side with a beval gear on that drives the vertical part that drives the seed plate, that drive will be closed and you cannot see it without unbolting the top cover on it, on a John Deere when you tip the seed box those gears are right out in the open but on the Ferguson all you see is a gear box. Does your seed unit drive with a chain or a V-belt. That will tell me witch units you have . And one book that I have handy says Massey-Ferguson name was on in 1955 but the tractors carried the Ferguson name thru 1957. My name is Lester (Leroy) helmlinger at lesfarm@bright.net if you could email me some pictures direct. We can't seem to be able to email any pictures with our putor. Does your planter have a fixed setup for the lower lift arms to hook to or does it use the standard Ferguson 11 hole drawbar. Mine was clamped to the bar on the markers and used the 11 hole drawbar but the units were from a bar with the molded ends for the markers as I got it out of a junkyard and it was all that was left of 2 different planters, found the units and bought them and a year later when the junk (Parts) yard went out of bussiness and had an auction I found the toolbar.

third party image

It sounds like you have a D-PO-A20 planter with the A-RO-B60 Fertilizer attachment. The planter's id tag would be on the Center Strut (where the top link attaches).

Here is a picture of the D-PO-A20 Planter

You can see the tag in the middle

Jeff, thank you for your reply. I will have to take a better look at mine to see if the tag is there. I saw the one on the box and settled for that. I off loaded it tonight in a hurry and didn't see it either. Will look in the morning. My back wheels cut down in the center where I see yours are flat and near the top link is a lever for the left and right cutters which are still on there. Thanks again and I will post what I find tomorrow. Eric

Without doing some digging I don't know what planter you have from numbers. I think you are talking a 2 row 3 point hitch? If so are the units driven by a single chain from axle between press wheels or is it one of the planters that each unit is driven by a v belt off of each press wheel on left side of wheel? The V belt planter is a tool bar planter and the other is a standard type planter. You should have an 11" seed plate that is not avaible anyplace. Unless it is a special type planter; bedder; lister; cultivator mount; I may have a book on it .

It has a tool bar, draw bar for the 3point, then 2 seed hoppers and 2 fertalizer boxes. There are 2 chains each side. I believe one to drive the fertalizers and one longer one to drive the corn. Any help would be great. Oh, the seed plates are in great shape. have pics I could send just let me know Eric
