ANother weird gas tank issue....

I removed the tank from the TO-20 today and was suprised to hear a very heavy rattle (other than the sandy sound of rust flakes) I thought at first maybe someone had dropped a wrench or some tool in the tank at some point--maybe a magnet? But after peering in there as well as possible it looks like a large peice of steel--flat and bigger than either the fuel inlet or outlet that was welded inside at assembly has rusted loose from its moorings inside and is banging around. What is the geography of the tank innard in stock form? Is there a plate or anything welded inside as a splashguard or something that could have come loose? Thanks DOUG

SOunds like a baffle of some sort to me too. I guess I'll have to cut it open and remove it in order to line the tank. Although I have a friend who fabs/welds real well and was thinking of having him try to reproduce the identical tank in a heavier aluminum for me. Thanks DOUG

Sounds like you found a baffle that rusted loose. Most car gas tanks have them inside the tank to keep the gas from sloshing all to one side while making turns and such. When you consider the weight - about 8 pounds per gallon - times 20 or more gallons (in a car), that's alot of weight to be thrown around, making the car harder to handle while manuvering.

Just my 2 cents worth...

Not to be too technical... in reply to Mansel SoCal, 04-18-2006 00:35:51
The standard weight for fuel (gasoline) is 6lb/ gallon or .763 kg/L water is ... 1kg/liter or 7.86 lb/gal. Thus we use 8lbs/gal as the standard for water.

FYI

I have heard of "heavy water" (D2O, 1.1 kg/liter) before but not your "lighter water"... :-) Don't know what is in your water to make it so light, but most water is about 8.33 lbs/gallon... Link WATER PROPERTIES HERE. Jim

Alright...
I figured I would get called on quoting the weight of gas when I knew it was somewhat lighter. I just wanted to make the point that you've got some weight to consider moving around in that tank, thus the baffle(s). Not really a problem even in a car unless you drive the way I did 30 years ago! Thanks for the clairification & enlightenment, guys.

Math error. I was using a diet Pepsi can for a conversion factor... 12 fl oz. (355ml).

1 kg/liter * 2.2lb/kg* 1 liter/ 1000ml *355ml/12 fl oz. *128 fl oz/gallon. = 8.33lb/gal.

I miss-read the can as 375ml = 12 oz.

Jeff

Doug, I had the same thing on my TO30. I cut tank open to find a plate identical stamping etc. to the end of the tank. A baffle or reinfocment. I removed it clean inside of tank, with wire brush, air etc. and got a very, very good welder to weld back the access hole I cut . Then used tank sealer on inside of tank. Cheaper than a new one.
