Several months ago, I asked if anybody knew the model number for the Carter carburetor used as an alternnate for the Marvel-Scheber TSX 458 on the TO-30. No one could give me the model number, which surprised me because of all the knowledgeable people on this forum.
I have one as a spare but it doesn't have the Carter brass tag on it to identify the model. After a long search, I found out that this Carter caburetor is a Model UT 997S. I am posting this so it'll be in the archives in case anybody else needs the info.

Jerry,

That is some interesting info. Do you know if your Carter carb is the same model that was used on the TO-35? It may also have a bigger main jet for use in the TO-30 if a person was to put overbore sleeves and pistons in.My parts book is a 1955 print and shows the Carter carb also. Does any one know if it was also listed in the earlier TO-30 parts book? Little details like this keep the Ferguson hobby interesting.

Mike, I think it's the same casting but it is a different model number for the TO-35. I believe its called a 2223S when it's used on the TO-35. I believe it will have a different main jet/nozzle and a larger venturi because of the increased displacement of the Z134 engine relative to the Z129.

Why would you want to change to a Carter from the Marvel-Scheber carb? I have one on my TO-35 (Marvel-Scheber) and it has been flawless, and simple to adjust if needed. Just wondering. Gregg

I agree that the M-S TSX 458 carb that came on most TO-30 is a straight forward simple design. So is the Carter UT, simple and straight forward. I never said anything about wanting to change carbs. I just found it interesting that there was a parts diagram for a Carter carb for the TO-30 in my Ferguson Parts Manual and I picked one up for $20 bucks + shipping with the thought of rebuilding it and having a spare carb.

Jerry,
I have been a Ferguson owner since about 1995 and was not aware that the Carter carburetor was ever used on the TO-30. I kew that they were used on the TO-35 and up but not the TO-30. What is the serial number of your 30. It would be interesting to find more imformation on this subject. Thanks, for bringing it up again.I have a 1949 TO-20, a 1952 TO-30 and a 1961 MF-35 and they all have MS carbs of different model numbers.

Yeah I was surprised too, Mike. I found the parts diagram for the Carter carb in my TO-20, TO-30, & TE-20 Ferguson Parts Manual and it was listed for use on the TO-30 only. There was no model number and the parts list used Ferguson part numbers. I tried to find a model number without much sucess until just the other day. Without the model number it was hard to order a kit for the carb. Carter uses a brass tag to identify the carb model number and they eventually break off and are lost so there is no way to be sure of the model number unless you send it to some one familiar with "Carter Forensics" to get it identified and that is a very costly process.
Paul Nelson tells me that Ferguson went to the Carter carbs to save money so apparently the Carter was cheaper. I'd believe that because it appears to be an Aluminum casting rather than the heavy cast iron of the M-S carbs. I don't think it makes it any poorer performance wise than the M-S as all the carburetors on automobiles went to this type of material. I happened to find the Carter in an classifieds in this forum and bought it for $20 + shipping with the intention of rebuilding it and using it for a spare.

My 54 TO-30 (Serial # TO 137181) has the original type M-S TSX 458 on it and is in regular use on our ranch.
