What order does the oil filter and compression spring go in. 1. Above the filter (engine side) or 2. Below the filter (between the oil pan plate and filter). Thanks Bill H.

Spring goes above the 'can' that in turn is above the filter to hold them down against oil pan. The oil filter 'can' (with the spring above it) should stay in oil pan when you drop the round plate to access the filter.

Expanding: When I took the oil pan plate loose the oil pan bolt, plate, filter, and compression spring fell into my oil catch container. I need to know where the compression spring goes -- above or below the new filter. Thanks Bill H.

Okay I pull the oil pan off and installed a new one from Yesterday's Tractors. What I found from engine down -- was a spring on the 1. shaft above the can 2 then the can 3 then the mesh basket inside the can - also a pipe comming down through both can and mesh basket 4 oil filter another washer and spring - I'm not sure the order on this item because they fell into my oil catch pan. I can see there is some differences of opion as to the reassembly. Comments Please Bill H.

I am a tractor newbie so I bought the manual but I find the written explanation for changing the filter to be very confusing. If you leaf through the manual and look at the pictures (try fig. 143 on page 70)it appears to show the spring above the thing that looks like an upside down coffee can. Figure 145 on page 71 also seems to show the spring located as I have previously stated. Would someone else who has the dealer ferguson shop manual care to comment?
