Changed oil for first time after rebuild,(Z129)After 20 hours. Noticed very very small brass particles.
Is this something to worry about or just part of the
break in. Also I have an oil leak at the front cover
where the Govenor linkage comes out about a table
spoon an hour while its running. The fan pushes it all over the motor. I paid someone to rebuild it,
he said he would cover it for a year...

Hi FTD,

If you have about a half pint of the oil I would send it to be analized. They will tell you where it came from in the engine and you will have something to document a problem if your rebuilder gives you a problem. When I rebuilt my Z129 I took the governor shaft out and replaced the bearings and seal. It is a job to do it right but well worth it.

Brass dust is more like it. My block was cracked and
this was a replacement. The particles are like if
you sanded metal with 400 grit sandpaper.

The only brass/bronze that I can think-of are the thrust washers on the front of the crank. My recollection is they are bronze/brass. It might, and I say might... be possible for them to wear real bad if they were not installed with the proper end play, or proper order. Wouldn't mind getting another opinion on that... I'm guessing.

Might also be brass dust if the rebuilder used brass wire wheels to clean the inside of the crankcase or head. But I would think he would have rinsed all that junk out before re-assembly.
Take the oil to your rebuilder and see what he thinks. Maybe ask him to drop the oil pan for a look see if he can't easily explain it.

My parts book shows a oil seal on the governor shaft.I never messed with it myself, I think it is a real pain to get at it. My guess is most rebuilders probably don't mess with it either. That sounds like a lot of oil loss, must be worn pretty bad, the only oil up that high in the housing is splashing.
Call your rebuilder. It can be fixed.

George

Was the block cracked and subsequently repaired by furnace brazing? If so, when the block was remachined, there might be some swarf from the machining that was not properly cleaned out. I can't think of any brass parts in the engine that would shed into the oil. Regarding your oil leak, it could be a poor fit on the tming cover that might need some RTV to fix. Mine does a little of that. I'd talk to the guy that rebuilt the engine and see if he'll stand behind his work.

I would contact this person and let him know what you found. He may want to do something now rather than do a lot later. Possibly it is one of the bearing not right or has spun out.
