Nobody knows if the mainshaft pilot bearing is supposed to be a press fit or a slip fit? Need to know whether or not I need a mainshaft!

I don"t know if pilot bearing as you call it is a press fit. However if you think it is to loose a new bearing might help. Not all bearings are exactly the same. If you like the old bearing maybe you could punch mark the main shaft . If it to hard to punch mark and the bearing is not so loose it wobbles then I would mount it using Lock tite Stud and Bearing mount. If I did punch mark the shaft I would use Lock tite on it also. A new shaft might be difficult to locate. I have had shafts built up with a spray weld process at the machine shop. If you do lock tite it make sure the bearing is fully in the direction it will be when bolted together. Good Luck!
