Clicking 175 Massey

I bought a 175 Massey that had a clicking sound which I originally thought was in the hydraulic pump since it appeared to be coming from that area of the tractor. After breaking it down twice and replacing the pump with a new one, rebuilding the live PTO unit and going through the whole rear end replacing all the bearings and seals it still clicks constantly. It doesn't matter if the clutch is engaged or disengaged, if I'm using the power lift or not, regardless of load, the tractor clicks the moment it is started. The clicking sound speeds up or down in relation to engine rpm. Everything works great but the metallic clicking is not normal. I know it is not coming from the engine. The noise is too far back. I am stumped. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi Rayburn With the independent pto the gears in the front of the transmission for the pto through shaft & three point pump turns anytime the engine is turning. So if it does not go away when the clutch is release it almost has to be in that system some place. You have already checked about every thing in back of the transmission the only other thing I can think of that might be causing it is one of the pto gears up in the front of the transmission has a chiped tooth I have found a couple that something had run through them and broke a tooth on one of the gears they made a clicking sound all the time they were running but was much worse when the lift was lifting a load.

Thanks for the feedback! I have not been in the transmission other than to examine what I could with a flashlight when I had it broken apart on both occasions. Everything I see looks good and moves freely without the click but it is possible, I suppose, to have a chipped tooth that does not click until it is under the load of driving the pump? The click is slower than engine speed. If I planned to sell I definitely would tear into the transmission but must admit I am tempted to continue using it unless the click becomes worse. If it does have a chipped gear am I doing more harm to run it if clicking doesn't get worse?

Thanks to all who have responded!

I had a car once that made a clicking sound, and it had a cracked flywheel.

I have no idea if the flywheel on a 175 could do that - I just figured I'd throw the thought out there.

Does this tractor have "Live PTO" (2-stage clutch) or "Independent PTO" with the hydraulic clutch pack behind the hydraulic pump?

It does not have a 2 stage clutch. The pump is always operating. The tractor has a hydraulically operated clutch pack (Independent PTO) which is activated by the auxiliary pump mounted above the main pump. I rebuilt both the clutch pack and the control valve that supplies fluid to the unit. The tractor did not come with multi power. The dash has the original blank cover in the slot it would have been located. Thanks for your response!

I had a 165 with independent pto that developed a noise like that. It broke a tooth off the spur gear of the outer input shaft. Does the click seem to be about 1/3 engine speed?

If it is making a noise when the clutch pedal is depressed and the tractor is not moving it has to be in the moter, nothing else is moving. hyd, pto, transmision and rear end all stop. I should add, the pedal must be all of the way down for this test.
