Another hydraulic question

On all the older tractors I have encountered including my TO30, the lift lever (on the quadrant, right side of seat) is very sensitive. Only one precise setting location holds implement position. Slightly lower and the imp. drifts down. Slightly higher and the imp. drifts up. Is this normal or an indication of wear or maladjustment? By comparison, newer tractor 3 pt lifts move implement to the height corresponding to the location on the quadrant and remains at that spot. Any help will be appreciated. thanks.

These early fergusons did not have "position control", so your tractor is working fine. There are several versions of position control that are available... (search for "position control", "jeff-0h", "zane")there are those that you can buy or those that you make. It is really a quite simple mechanical feedback mechanism that pulls the quadrant lever up when the lift starts to go down and visa-versa (the same thing you are doing with your hand to keep it "level"). It does the same thing externally that the newer model tractors did internally, like the Ford 8N, Ferguson TO-35, etc..
