I completed the 12 volt conversion this weekend on my TO20. It starts great and runs great but the alternator is not charging the battery. The instructions that came with the conversion kit say that full throttle may be needed at first to make the alternator start charging. I did that, driving around for several minutes, but no sign of life in the alternator. Does anyone have any suggestions for waking up this alternator? Thanks.

If if you used the one wire alternator system you well need to rev the engine some to excite the alternator. That is the system I used on my TO-30 and it worked OK. But you may have something different.

Glenn - I used a TO30 kit because there does not seem to be a kit for the TO 20. I was told on this forum that everything but the bracket would be right, which was the case. I found that the bracket from the TO30 kit would work if bent 90 degrees. I bent it by heating it with a propane torch and using a large pipe wrench for leverage. I cracked it in the process but a welder fixed it for me. Now all I need is to get the darned alternator working.

Don: I've been looking for a 12v conversion kit but, have not found one for the TO20. I've read that the mounting bracket for the TO30 kit won't match up with the TO20 pulley. Did your kit work or did you have to make a bracket? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Don: Thanks for the help. Now I gotta finish installing 2-way cylinders on the loader and I'll be ready to tackle the alternator. Thanks again.

I searched the Archives as suggested and it seems to boil down to two methods: run the engine fast, which I tried, or briefly touch a jumper wire from the p1 terminal to the battery terminal with the engine running, which I guess will be my next attempt. Does anyone have any advice or cautions before I try it? Thanks.
