Hey guys i have a TE20 that i bought converted to 12v. I recently added a battery cut off because it would drain the battery. The previous owner also added a points kill switch because he said it would burn them up if left on.

Basically the tractor works fine except the generator doesnt put off enough charge to charge the battery consistently (especially with a low rpm like i run it).

Is there some complex way i have to make this 12v? I dont know how the positive ground comes into play on these either.

Thanks for the help

Ok so lets say i get the automotive alternator mounted up and running. You said i had to get rid of the positive ground too. How would i go about eliminating positive ground on this tractor?

Thanks for the info.

no big deal, just turn the battery around. Connect negative side of battery to the tractor frame, should be able to use existing cable, and connect positive side of battery to starter switch, just switch existing cables. The lights don't care witch way current flows nothing has to be done. The only other thing to check would be the coil, positive battery should go to the positive side of the coil

In general terms any alternator that you can get fitted to the tractor with a pulley on it that fits your fan belt and mounted in a position for the fan belt to turn the the pulley will work. Some will work a lot better than others. The early alternators required the use of an external regulator and you will be better off avoiding those. what probably works the best is a Delco Remy 10 or 12SI They run about $40 plus core charge. They have the regulator built in and are really simple to wire up. If you look at the following link you can see what they look like >Link

All alternators are negative ground so you would have to switch that.
I just finished converting and will be glad to try and help if you have questions or problems

I have a generator. I know there is a difference between 6v and 12v generators as in the parts catalogs you need to buy a 12v if you do the conversion. I was hoping to not pay all that money for the tractor that i barely use.

If you say i can just buy some type of automotive alternator that would be fine. I have a few Jeep alternators here from 4.0L engines that i could fab on. I just need to know if that will work. I also need some type of a regulator right? So it doesnt explode my battery?

Thanks

You mentioned generator. Does your system have an alternator or a generator

I am guessing you have one of two problems. First, you may have a defective diode in the alternator. This will cause the alternator to put out only about 8 volts. You can check this by hooking up a voltometer at the battery while the tractor is running. It should show about 14.5 volts. If it doesn't, take it to AUTOZONE and have it checked out. They will check it for free and tell you if there is really a problem.
The second possibility is that the alternator is not "exciting" at low rpm and therefore is not charging the batttery. If you have done the voltometer check and find less than 14 volts you may have to rev the engine to about 2/3 throttle to get the alternator to excite. If that doesn't work, you can make a short jumper wire to manually excite the alt. Here's how I do it. Stick a three inch piece of multi-strand wire down into the p1 terminal at the alternator. You want the wire to just stick down into the terminal enough to make contact. The other end of the wire should also have 1/4 inch of the insulation removed. Start the tractor and then touch the open end of that wire to the "Bat" terminal on the alternator(the big one) just long enough to see a small spark. That should start the alt charging. Check it with a voltometer. My 12 V alt on my TO35 will excite either way, revs or jumper, but won't start charging just because the engine is running.

Hi I recently converted my to20 to a 12 volt system.Boy what a difference,I always had problems with the 6 volt system.I put a one wire delco 63 amp self-energizing alternator on it.also 12v coil,key switch,silanoid and battery.
I had to have a bracket made for the alternator, but its not to hard.I didn't have the welder or I would have made it myself. If you have any question's you can e-mail me.good luck
