After several days of searching for a solution to an alternator that wouldn't charge on a TO35, I discovered the importance of a 1ohm 50volt diode.
In spite of the numerous references on the forum (all of which I read trying to find a solution)I solved the problem in a couple of steps.
1. I took the alternator to an AutoZone store to confirm that it was charging. I then took it home and reinstalled it only to find that it wouldn't charge. Revving the engine wouldn't do it, but a momentary touch by a jumper wire from termainal 1 to Batt. terminal would get it charging. I did this right at the back of the alternator. 2. The next step was to buy and install the 1 amp 50 volt diode in the #1 alternator wire between the alternator and the little yellow dash light before it goes to the switch. After I did this, I could start the tractor and rev the engine to about half throttle and the alternator began to charge.
Hope this may help anyone who may have had the same struggle.
