IT'S ME AGAIN. I AM STILL GOING OVER MY NEW TO-30 (I JUST HAVE A FEW MINUTES EACH EVENING). I HAD MENTIONED IN AN EARLIER POST THAT THE STEERING ARMS LEAK OIL PRETTY BAD. IT WAS SUGGESTED TO FILL THE STEERING GEAR BOX WITH GREASE INSTEAD OF OIL, WELL I FINALLY GOT AROUND TO LOOKING IN THE GEAR BOX AND FOUNG IT IS ALREADY FULL OF GREASE. THE PREVIOUS OWNER MUST HAVE ALREADY COME UP WITH THAT. IT LOOKS LIKE HE JUST UNSCREWED THE PLUG AND SQUIRTED IT IN THERE. IS THIS OK? WITH SO MUCH OIL LEAKING OUT (A SMALL PUDDLE EACH NIGHT), I WONDER IF IT IS FULL OF GREASE IN THE BOTTOM. DOES THIS MEAN IT WAS HALF FULL OF OIL WHEN HE PUT IN THE GREASE OR CAN A LITTLE BIT OF OIL LEAK FOR A LONG TIME? JUST WONDERING SHOULD I JUST RUN IT UNTIL I NOTICE A PROBLEM OR INVESTIGATE FURTHER. THERE IS GREASE UP TO THE PLUG NOW. ONE OTHER QUESTION: MY OWNERS MANUEL SAYS RUN SAE 20 IN THE CRANKCASE WHEN THE TEMPERATURE IS OVER 50 DEGREES, I ASSUME THIS IS STILL RECOMMENDED. I KNOW OILS ARE DIFFERENT AFTER ALL THESE YEARS SO I THOUGHT I'D ASK. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE INPUT. VA.

Hi VA Grease in the steering box is Zane Shermans fix for an n series tractor.I supose grease (thick type general purpose #2) would be ok but grease can break down over time. when grease gets old it separates into oil and basically soap or wax. The challenge is to get the old grease out and the new in. I would suggest removing the pipe plug and installing a reducer and zerk fitting to get the grease in. Remove a lash adjuster bolt to let the old grease out. Get a shop manual to readjust the selector lash bolt.My Fergy also leaks oil from the steering arms. I use 10w40 In my TO-20 (crank case),works good for me 8-). Hope this helps.
