Upon removing the head on my FE35, I found that someone had left off the removable part of the swirl chambers. (And turned the pistons around backwards.) What I need to know, should I try to find replacements, or reinstall the heads without them? I read somewhere on here that it might start better without them. If they are necessary, does anyone know of a source? Tractor was very hard to start before, but that may have been lack of compression. (Am replacing rings, grinding valves, etc.) Thanks for any help you can give, I'm a first time poster.

If it matters to anyone, i removed the pre cups from my 23c engine and it would'nt run at all. Would just barely throttle up above idle, and couldn't see a thing for the smoke. It runs much better with them even though they are cracked severly. If anyone has been able to locate any here in the U.S. would like to know where. Thanks.

Just want to mention that some 23C for severe cold were fitted with electrical glow plugs just below the injectors.
If anyone have the UK shop manual for FE/MF 35, they can see it in Group G, page 33 and 34.

There is a fellow in England who converts old heads for use with glowplugs, and I hear rumors that a Nissan 12 volt glow plug is cheap and fits well.
From what I hear glow plugs on the 23C makes wonders for starting.

Had another thought. If I leave out pre-cups, thus creating more space in combustion chamber, will that lower my compression ratio? I've read on here that too thick head gasket, valves ground too deep, etc. will lower compression, causing difficult starting. Tractor runs fine when I can get it started. Also, am considering adding an electric fuel pump. Is the C.A.V. injector pump finicky about fuel pressure on the supply side, or will any automotive fuel pump work?

Excessive pressure can upset CAV pumps - it alters transfer pressure, therefore advance too. However, can"t see an ordinary pump achieving those pressures - only specialist pumps that run about 60psi.

old 20 suppiles them # 1210118 as close as I can figure. I don't know if you need them.
Others may supply them as well.

Indirect injection engines are usually harder to start and create more emissions than direct injection ones. I"ve never tried a 23C without its pre-combustion chambers, but it certainly can"t be worse. Only query I would have - pre-combustion diesels normally come with pintle injectors - they may not suit direct injection. Another nozzle type may be required (and improve starting. Frankly, I"d not be in a hurry to replace those chambers. They have a habit of cracking anyway.

I have heard the same about removing the chambers. I don't know much about diesel however I do own a TO-35 w/ 23C. I have heard on hear before that those chambers were very hard to find. I was also thinking about the electric fuel pump but mine sems to be running good now. I am going to sell it I beleive the 23C is not that good of a motor (wish I had the Perkins).
