Anyone have any ideas on where to buy? Or know what was the cross section of these felt seals (backing plate to drum)? They would be easy enough to make, and I could probably guess close enough...

What have others done?

Jim

Jim
If you are talking about the gasket where the shims are located ,i made up some from paper bag material, just keep the thickness the same as what you take off

Is this a genuine part Jim as I can't see it in the parts list or has someone fitted it to try and stop a leak?

Hi John... No this is, I believe, an original part. My shop manual talks about these dust/dirt seals as well. These are felt strips, probably with a cross section about 3/8"x3/8" (? a guess) and 3'(? a guess) long that are stuffed into the outside groove in the backing plate to act as a seal against the outside lip of the moving brake drum. The book says to leave a gap in the seal at the bottom to let the brake dust out. In fact, they make the point that this is the only difference between the right and left backing plate installation (the gap would be at the top if you switched them).

Hi Jim, well you learn something every day, I have looked at the parts list again and it does show it on the TO20 only as:- TO2218 Brake dust seal & Cement (Service Combination)this must be a USA thing as it isn't shown on the TE tractors. Thanks for that, very interesting....John
