The draft control spring is too loose on my TO-30. Apparently, it is not as trivial to tighten as it appears. The screw appears to be frozen. What is the best way to get this working again without breaking something? Jim

You can try heat as the others suggest but don't use any force or you will twist the control fork inside and as they are only pressed steel and probably almost rusted through by now so if you use force you will break it. The rod through the spring is held on to the fork by a pin, it doesn't need anything else for what it does. If you cant get the yoke end to turn on the rod then you need to remove the top cover of the hydraulics so you can hold the rod inside and not put all the load on the control fork. You need to disconnect the control valve from the control fork before you try to get the top off. If you need information for this and how to set the control spring AND the control lever quadrant just email me at:- fergusontractors at tiscali dot co dot uk and tell me what you are trying to do and I will send the information to you.

Jim mine came loose I guess with 40 ft.lb. The piece with the threads has an end on it that pins to a yoke which is pinned to the forks that go down to the control valve in the pump.I know where I can get the part if you do have bad luck with it but the heat should do it. I was sure happy to be able to adjust mine and it sure helped the load on the tractor pulling a digging scoop. Dave

Jim mine was rusted and I heated it with a torch (dull red) through the spring being careful not to heat the spring and take out the temper. Cleaned the threads and greased it and now keep it greased and works fine. To adjust it put the lever in the up position and weight on the 3pt. the spring should turn by hand with no slack. Dave

Thanks.. and another question.. in reply to Little Dave, 11-08-2005 13:41:46
Thanks... glad to see someone was successful!! I can torch it, but how much torque will it take before I break something? Seems kinda flimsy inside.... Jim

It will stand very little torque before you damage it. It was never made for a twisting motion, only a push and pull. You need to remove the top cover so that you can hold that screwed rod inside with a wrench after disconnecting the Control Fork first so that there is no load passed to it.

Jim, this question has come up before and if you do a search, I'm sure you'll find some answers. You have to be carefull because the shaft is a special threaded piece that I understand is hard to come by if it's ruined and you can damage the feedback linkage underneath the top cover if you twist it too much. They'll solutions I ecall range from lots of PB Blaster to the blue flame wrench. JohnUK may have some suggestions also. My TO-30 spring is a little too tight and I've tried WD-40, and mild heat too no avail. I'm planning to lay it up and replace the rockshaft bushings and the front pivot pin bushing and loosen the spring but I haven't gotten to it yet.
