Have just bought a gold and grey FE35. The seller told me it was built in the mid 1950's but I am trying to get more information. The are a couple of numbers marked on the engine and these are

SJ2658ES and 302299 SM (orN) What do these numbers refer to? Also, would these tractors be positive or negative ground?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

The engine number is SJ2658ES The other number looks very much like a tractor serial number but it wouldn't be on the engine block. It is normally stamped on a plate on the dash panel near the switch. that number is from 1962 so it is far too late. Grey and Bronze FE35's were numbered 1001 - 74656 so it was built in 1956 or 57. there are three letters in front of the serial number like SDM = dual clutch or SNM = single clutch. it has a 23c Standard Motors engine. It would be negative ground at that time I think, I am checking that for you though. They changed from positive to negative somewhere around that time. Look for the number stamped in the top of the gearbox cover near the filler plug too and the rear gutter of the fuel tank, I have seen them stamped in there at times, not all the tractors are like this though.
