Its easy to find out if the cap is causing the problem, take it off, if it still behaves the same then it can't be the cap. If you need step by step information on how to overhaul your Schebler carburettor, email me at:-

and I will send it all, there are quite a number of pages with pictures.John

Gas cap has to be vented; no vacuum, no pressure. Vacuum builup is a nuisance but pressure buildup is deadly. Somethin's gotta give, and gas sprayed on a hot engine isn't a pleasant thought.

If you have gas in the oil, most likely your float level was set too high when you did the rebuild and your carb is overlowing with fuel and flooding. If the gas tank is full and the float is not shutting the fuel off, the fuel can fill the intke manifold and run into a cylinder with an open valve and contaminate the oil. The Marvel-Schebler carb is really touchy about the float setting. Shut the valve off at the tank to prevent this in the near term. Drain and replace the oil before trying to run it again. You'll have to pull the carb and check the float setting to verify that it is correct. When you rebuilt the carb, did you soak it overnight in a carb cleaner before blowing out the passage and letting it dry? Cleanliness is probably the most important part of the rebuild. It's gotta' be aqueaky clean. If you didn't do that, you might consider doing it on the second go 'round.

Gotta have a vent!... Now it may be that what you have is vented... some after market stuff was vented over the lip inside the cap... Take off the cap and look inside. If it has a hole. suck on it.. if it lets air in, it is vented. I wouldn"t drill a hole in one because it gives a direct path for dust... You should be able to find the correct cap.... Sorry that I can not answer the carb question... sounds lean but there are many possibilities...
