My recently acquired 1954 2085 has an alternator on it. The mounting brackets aren't original. Did this year Fergie originally have a generator. Also, I have seen pictures of early 50's Fergies with generators - they look like starters ie, long and cylindrical vs distinctive alternator appearance. Are there alternators that look like generators?

12 volt generators are still available and all the other electrical stuff. If you get stuck mail me.

It originally had a generator, and you're right, they do look sort of like a starter motor.
I am not aware of alternators that look like generators or starters.

Thanks, Jim. I'm surprised that my '54 had a generator. I read somewhere that all TEA's after serial # 200001 had alternators, or am I mixing this up with 6V to 12V conversions? Nevertheless, if it had a generator, any idea if these are available, and where?

Yes, you are mixing this up with 6 to 12 v conversions. If yours is a '54 then it will have a serial # > 200,000 and so would have been 12 volts from the outset. I think you can still get a generator. Get back to me if you really strike out as I am pretty sure I have a spare or two in my pile of parts. May need to be rebuilt, but as I say, if you're desperate...
I have one from a Triumph car on one of my TEAs; fits not too badly and unless you're a real expert you wouldn't know it isn't original. You'll need a regulator too, and if memory serves, they aren't too cheap.

Thanks Jim. Always thought 6V was synonymous with generator and 12V with alternator. If you could forward your e-mail address, I'll file it for future reference. I will look around for a gen, and mounting brackets, and if no joy, I'll contact you. Thanks - GS

I am reasonably sure that the TEA's in 54 had a generator. I say that because I have a 55 model and it has one. If your tractor has an alternator, the chances are that it was converted to 12 volt at some time. This is not a bad thing unless you are a purist and want your tractor to be completely original. There are generators available, even through this site, but you need to check and see if you have a 12 volt system first. What size battery do you have on your tractor? If you have a six volt system, you will need to go back to the generator, unless I am missing something. I am not aware of an alternator that puts out 6 volts. If it were me, I would search through used parts first for a generator, as they are expensive to buy but not too expensive to rebuild. Just my two cents worth.

Thanks Bob - No, it's 12V - hate to 'downgrade' back to 6V, however I would like to restore it to original. I can live with 6V quirks. Haven't been able to find any www. leads on used or new generators, however.
