I just bought a 1956 TO-35 and am having the engine rebuilt. It's a gas Z-134 Continental. The mechanic just called and said that there is a "small" crack through the center main journal. My question is, can the crack be welded or is the block usless? I read a post on this forum from Mattoney back on 8/10 where he said that "these engines came cracked srtaight from the factory." Is it possible that may be the case here? I'm new to these old tractors so I don't know anything about them except what I've read. If I have to buy a new block can anyone suggest a source? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I just rebuilt a TO-30. It had cracks between the sleeve webbing but I've never seen one crack in the crank bearing webbing. If it is cracked there, it's toast. You can get a used, clean, standard, and uncracked block from Pittsburg Tractor in Pittsburg Texas for $550.00. You will have to take all of your studs out for the new (to you) block and send the old block back to get your $150.00 core charge reimbursed. They have everything you need for a Ferguson at very reasonable prices. I would check it out and make your machine shop show you the cracks first.

Thanks to everyone for the good information. The block went to the machinist for inspection and I haven"t heard back yet what he found. I have passed this info along to the mechanic. I believe he"s honest. I hope it"s just a scratch but if not I"ll probably bite the bulllet and buy a block. The tractor is in good shape otherwise.

Can't ever recall seeing a cracked main. Is it certain it's a crack? Has it been tested (Ardrox - or whatever you use over the pond) - or is it perhaps a scratch from a slipped tool?

I've never heard of a crack thru the main either... not saying it is impossible though. The casting is much thinner between the cylinders on either side of the center main. Might be a stress crack if the engine had locked-up in it's previous 50 year history. By all means go check it out, maybe get a 2nd opinion.
If you had no antifreeze in the oil when you got the tractor, and the center main looks sturdy, your probably okay doing nothing.

A crack in the Main race/bearing area is not what earlier poster meant. These engines tend to crack at the bottom of the sleeve area in the base of clys. These tend to vary in width due to overheating during engine use. Small cracks are deemed to be non problematic. I would not like to see a crack in the mains. Gregg M. Ohio

I just heard from the mechanic. the machine shop says it's a scratch or surface flaw like gerard thought it might be. The machine shop is too far away for me to look at it myself but I have been assured everything is OK. Thanks to everyone for the information and advise. When I get the tractor I'll post a picture.
