Hey Guys, I have been working on an issue from another post (TO-20 sputtering)and came across an interesting issue I thought you guys could help explain. The tractor would start surging and wanting to shut down after couple of hundred feet, however would operate in nuetral at all throttle positions with no issues. After some other troubleshooting noted in the other post, I came back to the battery and charging system. I I have 12-14.5 Vdc depending on throttle postion measured across the terminals so I assumed all was well. While running I lifted the negative terminal, ground, from the battery and the tractor shut down. I knew my charging voltage was good so I swapped the battery and attempted the same test, but this time it stayed running.

What do you think?, a bad positive terminal? I would think with a bad postive, it would be able to start it. Do you think this may be the cause of my problem.

Thanks to all

Is your alternator hooked up to the ignition circuit as well as the battery?

Not unusual for an engine with dynamo to continue running after the battery is disconnected, but can"t see how that"s related to your problem, which sounds like fuel starvation or main jet too lean.
