Do I have a 12 volt system or not?

I have a TO20 but not sure if it has been converted to 12 volts or not. This was my wifes late fathers tractor and never got the chance to meet him. I checked at the battery terminals {disconnected) and read over 14 volts, hight rpm, I crank with 12 volts and then disconect! So if I checked correctly, it's already been converted; it should be ok to crank & run it with the 12 volt battery? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. Gene Louisiana

One way to check is measure the voltage comming off the Generator. If an Alternator, then most likly a 12V system.

Gene, sounds like it has a 12 volt battery obviously with those voltage readings. Ideally, a 12 volt battery should measure 12.6 volts if fully charged and setting, but raise from 13 to near 14 or so at high charge when running.

Does it have 6 cells n caps like 12 volt batteries do or only 3 as 6 volt units?? Each cell is 2.1 volts.

Things to worry about if 6 to 12 volt conversions were done right is whether the old 6 volt coil was used in which case an external voltage dropping (12 to 6) series ballast resistor was added in the ignitions primary circuit between the ignition switch and coils input OR ELSE new full 12 volt rated coil were added,,,,, ,,,,, the charging system was properly converted to 12 volts,,,,, ,,,any lights were changed,,,,, ,,,,,polarity consideratiosn were fixed in cases of alternators.

Thanks John 4 reply! No battery used in tractor, I use a 12v. to get it cranked & then disconnect. My wifes father was shop forman at a Massey Ferguson dealership, I think it may have been converted, but not sure how to check it out.

If it cranks real fasttttt tttt, it was probably a 6 volt system originally, but if it cranks like normal it was likely 12 volt.

Is the coil labeled 6 or 12 volts????? ? Is there any external ballast resistor ahead of the coil????? ? Any Generator 6 or 12 volt labels?? If the coil gets so hot you cant touch it, its likely an unballasted 6 volt coil and youre running it at 12 volts.
